King James wording
King James Version
He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.THE KEY
The verse’s paired horizons leave no outside: the seas, river, and earth’s farthest edges all fall within one reach.
THE MEANING
The earth you inhabit is pictured as one field under a rule that reaches from sea to sea and from the river to its farthest edges. Borders and distance mark the breadth of that rule; they do not create an outside.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that some remote place lies beyond this rule dissolves: the verse places even the earth’s farthest edges within its reach.
THE ROOT
וְיֵרְדְּ
veyered
GROWS FROM
רדה
to rule, exercise dominion
“treads” in this verse is veyered. The root names the act of exercising rule; the surrounding sea-to-sea and river-to-edge phrases give that rule its astonishing extent. Elsewhere the same verb appears in a command against ruling harshly, showing that the root names authority without making harshness part of its meaning.
ALSO GROWS
veyirdu: rule, have dominion
וְיִרְדּוּ
Genesis 1:26 uses the same root for human rule over living creatures; here the stated reach extends across the whole earth.
tirdé: rule
תִרְדֶּה
Leviticus 25:43 uses this same verb in a prohibition against ruling with rigor, showing that the manner of rule matters.
THE PATTERN
Scripture portrays the fullest scope of rule through horizons that leave no realm or distance outside its reach.
The LORD sets his throne firm in the heavens, and his governance rules over all.I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the war-bow will be cut off. He will speak wholeness to the nations, and his rule will be from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. And Jesus came near and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to me in the heavens and upon the earth.THE THREAD
You shall not tread on him with breaking, but you shall stand in awe of your God.Both verses use רדה (rādâ, ‘rule, have dominion’). Psalm 72:8 names the reach of that rule, while Leviticus 25:43 shows that the same root can be bounded by a prohibition against harshness.
