King James wording
King James Version
Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.THE KEY
The cup is full, yet its fullness is already moving through the act of being drained.
THE MEANING
You see people turn back toward them, while waters from a full cup are wrung out for them. Abundance arrives through an image of pressure and extraction, so the full cup carries depletion within it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Visible abundance is proof of wholeness: the verse holds fullness together with the draining of the cup.
THE ROOT
מָצָה
matsah
GROWS FROM
מצה
To drain or draw out by sucking or squeezing.
“drained” in this verse is matsah. The phrase holds fullness and extraction together: the cup is full, and its contents are being squeezed out. The same root appears in images of drinking a cup down to its dregs, giving fullness the motion of depletion within it.
ALSO GROWS
yimtsu: They drain the dregs of the cup and drink them.
יִמְצוּ
The matching verb joins a cup to its last drops, sharpening the extraction inside this verse’s image of fullness.
matsit: Jerusalem has drained the dregs of the cup of trembling.
מָצִית
The same root links a full cup with the experience of drinking what remains at its bottom.
THE PATTERN
The cup of judgment is a measured portion poured out and drunk to its dregs.
For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, and the wine foams, full and mixed; he pours from it, but its dregs, all the wicked of the earth, drain and drink.Awake, awake, rise, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup of his burning. You have drunk the dregs of the cup of reeling, and drained them. And he himself drinks from the wine of the seething of God, poured out undiluted into the cup of his swelling. And he is tormented in fire and sulfur before the face of the set-apart messengers, and before the face of the Lamb.THE THREAD
For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, and the wine foams, full and mixed; he pours from it, but its dregs, all the wicked of the earth, drain and drink. The same verb, יִמְצוּ (yimtsu), appears as the wicked wring out and drink the cup’s dregs. That shared root lets the full cup here carry the image of contents drawn out to the last drop.
