King James wording
King James Version
Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.THE KEY
The Hebrew pictures the heart as souring and the inward self as being sharpened to a point.
THE MEANING
When another’s apparent ease holds your attention, the heart can sour and the inward self can feel sharpened from within. The verse gives that distress a bodily image: it reaches the hidden interior, not only the surface of thought. It speaks to the moment comparison begins to change what it feels like to be inside your own life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that comparison only judges what others have; this verse reveals that it can also turn your own inner life sour.
THE ROOT
יִתְחַמֵּץ
yitḥammēṣ
GROWS FROM
חמץ
ḥ-m-ṣ
Ferment, leaven, or become sour.
“sours” in this verse is yitḥammēṣ. The heart is pictured as souring or fermenting, so “grief” carries an inner change in flavor, not just a passing ache. The same root names leavened food and vinegar, connecting the feeling to something fermented and turned sour.
ALSO GROWS
ḥametz: Leavened or fermented substance.
חָמֵץ
The image of fermentation gives the heart’s grief a sense of something changing within.
ḥomets: Sour wine or vinegar.
חֹמֶץ
This branch makes the heart’s souring image concrete: distress alters the inner flavor.
אֶשְׁתּוֹנָן
eshtonan
GROWS FROM
שׁנן
sh-n-n
Sharpen or whet; make keen.
The word translated “pricked” carries the image of being sharpened or pierced. This same root can describe a tongue whetted like a sword and instruction impressed through repetition, giving the inward pain an edge that cuts or stays keen.
ALSO GROWS
shannenu: They sharpen or whet.
שָׁנְנוּ
The shared root makes the verse’s “pricked” feel like sharpness entering the inward self.
veshinnantam: Impress through repetition; teach diligently.
וְשִׁנַּנְתָּם
The same root’s sharpening image extends to words pressed keenly into memory.
THE PATTERN
Envy does its first damage inside, souring the heart before it becomes outward action.
But to Cain and to his offering he did not gaze. And it burned exceedingly in Cain, and his face fell.A healing heart is the life of the flesh, but envy is the rot of the bones. But if you have bitter boiling and strife in your heart, do not lift your neck against the truth, nor lie against it.THE THREAD
My flesh and my heart run out, and God is the rock of my heart and my portion for the ages. The same Hebrew word לְבָבִי (levavi, “my heart”) appears in both verses: here it sours, and in verse 26 God is named the strength of that same heart. The psalm traces a change in the inward life, from being pierced by comparison to finding strength beyond appearances.
