King James wording
King James Version
Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.THE KEY
The same hand that gives the earth its borders also gives its changes their shape.
THE MEANING
The ground beneath you has limits, and the year around you has a rhythm; both belong to a world given shape. A changing season is not evidence that order has disappeared, it is one of the forms that order takes.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that change means the world has lost its order: winter follows summer within the order this verse describes.
THE ROOT
יְצַרְתָּם
yetsartam
GROWS FROM
יצר
yatsar
To form, fashion, or shape.
The Hebrew word rendered “made” grows from יצר (yatsar, to form or shape), a verb also used for a potter’s work. Summer and winter are presented as forms given shape within the earth’s ordered life.
ALSO GROWS
yotser: Potter; one who forms.
יֹצֵר
This branch makes the verse’s “made” concrete: the seasons are described as shaped forms, not as shapeless events.
yetser: Formation; frame or inclination.
יֵצֶר
This branch names a formed pattern. Here, the seasons are part of the pattern given to the earth.
THE PATTERN
God’s ordering gives the earth both boundaries and rhythms.
And said, This far shall you come, but no further, and here shall your swelling waves be held?He makes the moon for appointed times; the sun perceives its going in.And he made from one blood every nation of humankind to settle upon all the face of the earth, marking out their fitted seasons and setting the boundary stones of their dwelling.THE THREAD
And he made from one blood every nation of humankind to settle upon all the face of the earth, marking out their fitted seasons and setting the boundary stones of their dwelling.Acts places appointed times beside the bounds of human habitation, just as Psalm 74 places seasons beside the earth’s borders. The same ordering embraces both the rhythms people inhabit and the ground where they dwell.
