King James wording
King James Version
So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;THE KEY
Getting what you crave can fill you without releasing the craving.
THE MEANING
You can receive what you crave and feel full, while fulfillment alone does not prove the craving has loosened its hold. The verse holds both realities together: the body is filled, and desire is answered.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that getting what you crave automatically frees you from craving.
THE ROOT
תַּאֲוָתָם
ta'avātām
GROWS FROM
אוה
To desire or long for; to crave.
Ta’avah can name appetite as well as an inward wish. Psalm 106:14 intensifies the same root by saying they “lusted exceedingly”, literally, they craved a craving, so the desire here is not merely imagined: it is answered with food, though being filled does not itself mean the craving is released.
ALSO GROWS
avah: To desire or long for.
אָוָה
The verb beneath the noun shows desire as an active reaching, not simply a preference.
ta'avah: Desire, appetite, or craving.
תַּאֲוָה
This noun names the longing that is brought within reach and answered in the verse.
THE PATTERN
Craving can be granted and the body filled while the craving itself remains in command.
They did not turn aside from their craving, while their food was still in their mouths. But they craved a craving in the wilderness, and tested God in the wasteland. Therefore God gave them over in the cravings of their hearts into uncleanness, for their bodies to be made weightless among themselves.THE THREAD
But they craved a craving in the wilderness, and tested God in the wasteland.Psalm 106 uses the same desire-root in the phrase “lusted exceedingly,” whose Hebrew repeats the idea: they craved a craving. That echo reveals the desire in Psalm 78 as appetite answered with food, not necessarily a longing released by fulfillment.
