King James wording
King James Version
And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.THE KEY
The river still flows, but it can no longer be drunk: judgment turns a source of life into a source of death.
THE MEANING
The water becomes blood, and drinking stops: what flows in abundance is no longer something you can receive. The verse presents judgment as a reversal in which the source itself becomes inaccessible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that abundance guarantees access: a river can keep flowing while no longer sustaining those who depend on it.
THE ROOT
וַיַּהֲפֹךְ
wayyahafoch
GROWS FROM
הפך
to turn or overturn
“overturned” in this verse is wayyahafoch. The Hebrew root carries the sense of overturning, so the verse depicts more than a change in appearance: the river’s nature and use are reversed. The related מַהְפֵּכָה (mahpekhah, upheaval or overthrow) carries the same root into a larger overturning of the order people depend on.
ALSO GROWS
haphakh: to turn or overturn
הָפַךְ
This base form shows the root’s central movement: one state or direction is turned into another.
mahpekhah: upheaval or overthrow
מַהְפֵּכָה
This noun shares the root’s consonants and shows how a turning can extend into a sweeping reversal.
THE PATTERN
In judgment, waters that sustain life can become blood, making the source itself bear witness.
And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, before the eyes of Pharaoh and before the eyes of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. And the second messenger sounds, and like a great mountain burning with fire is thrown into the sea; and the third part of the sea becomes blood. The third messenger pours out his bowl upon the rivers and the springs of the waters, and they become blood.THE THREAD
And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, before the eyes of Pharaoh and before the eyes of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. Both verses use the Hebrew root הפך (haphakh, to turn or overturn) for the waters becoming blood. Exodus states the event directly; the psalm uses the same root to hold that whole reversal inside one verb.
