King James wording
King James Version
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:THE KEY
Hope here is a practiced memory: God’s works stay in view, and his commandments are kept under watch.
THE MEANING
Your hope in God is joined to remembering what God has done. His commandments are guarded and carried into the present, so trust becomes more than a passing feeling.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that hope can remain strong while God’s works fade from memory and his instruction is left unattended.
THE ROOT
יִנְצֹרוּ
yintsoru
GROWS FROM
נצר
natsar
To guard, watch over, preserve.
“guard” in this verse is yintsoru. “Keep” carries the sense of watchful guarding, not simply holding something in mind. The same consonants appear in נֵצֶר (netser), “shoot” or “branch,” bringing a living image to preservation: what is guarded can continue to grow.
ALSO GROWS
notser: A keeper or guardian; one who watches over something.
נֹצֵר
This related form makes the verse’s keeping active: the commandments are held in attentive care.
netser: A shoot or branch.
נֵצֶר
This word shares the root’s consonants and offers an image of living growth, what is preserved can keep bearing life.
THE PATTERN
Trust is carried forward when God’s works remain in memory and his instruction is kept in practice.
Then guard yourself lest you forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.I store your word in my heart, so that I do not miss the mark against you.By this we perceive that we have perceived him, if we guard his commands.THE THREAD
Above every watch you keep, guard your heart, for from it flow the springs of life.“Keep” in both verses comes from נצר (natsar), “guard, watch over, preserve.” Proverbs speaks of guarding the heart as the source of life’s outflow; Psalm 78 speaks of guarding God’s commandments so trust remains alive.
