This verse in the King James

King James wording
All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;

Humanity’s place in creation crosses the fence: the psalm places domesticated herds and field beasts in one shared order.

The living world within the psalm’s view includes both animals gathered near and beasts ranging in the open field. The boundary between what is domesticated and what is wild does not divide them into separate worlds.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that humanity’s place in creation extends only to animals under human control.

שָׂדַי

śāday

GROWS FROM

שדה

Field or open country.

The Hebrew places these beasts in the open country, beyond the flock and herd named just before them. The verse’s scope therefore crosses from domesticated animals to creatures of the field.

ALSO GROWS

śādeh: Field, open country

שָׂדֶה

Names the setting in which the field beasts range.

śĕdēh: Field of; a form used before another noun

שְׂדֵה

Shows how the same field word can specify where creatures belong, as in “beasts of the field.”

Humanity’s place in creation reaches across its living creatures, linking human life with the wider world.

And God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."
Genesis 1:26 · SDVThe verse places humanity among a wide range of creatures, including the cattle named again in the psalm.
He makes the grass sprout for the cattle, and the herb for the service of humankind, to bring bread out from the earth.
Psalm 104:14 · SDVHuman life and animal life appear within the same provision of the earth.
For the creation waits with its head stretched forward, watching for the unveiling of the sons of God.
Romans 8:19 · SDVThe wider creation remains bound up with humanity’s place and future.
And God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."
Genesis 1:26 · SDV

Genesis names cattle with ⁨בְּהֵמָה⁩ (behemah), the same animal word that appears in Psalm 8:7 as “beasts.” The psalm’s list carries that creation-wide relationship from flocks and herds out into the field.
