This verse in the King James

King James wording
The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

What looks like open water to you is, to its creatures, a world of roads.

The verse places birds and fish within a living creation that moves through the air and along sea routes, including routes you cannot see from the surface. The water around you is inhabited and crossed, not merely a blank expanse.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The sea is not an empty, undifferentiated space.

אֹרְחוֹת

ʾorḥōt

GROWS FROM

ארח

A traveled course or way.

The Hebrew term carries the sense of a traveled course; a related branch names a traveler or guest. “Paths of the seas” therefore pictures a world navigated from within, with sea creatures moving along routes human sight misses.

ALSO GROWS

ʾōraḥ: Path, course, or way.

אֹרַח

The sea has courses its creatures move along, not just open water.

ʾōrēaḥ: Traveler or guest.

אֹרֵחַ

The path and the one who travels it share a root, bringing the sea’s moving inhabitants into the image.

עֹבֵר

ʿōvēr

GROWS FROM

עבר

To pass across or through.

“passes through” in this verse is ʿōvēr. This verb carries the sense of crossing from one side through to another. The creatures are not merely present in the sea; they move across its hidden courses.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāvar: To pass or cross.

עָבַר

It makes the verse’s creatures active travelers through their world.

ʿēver: The other side, or beyond.

עֵבֶר

This branch preserves the crossing’s sense of movement between sides.

The created world teems with life moving through realms that exceed human sight.

And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarming living soul, and let birds fly over the earth, upon the face of the expanse of the heavens."
Genesis 1:20 · SDVThe waters and sky teem with living creatures, making creation a world in motion rather than a still backdrop.
Have you entered the springs of the sea, or walked in the digging of the deep?
Job 38:16 · SDVThe sea’s springs and depths are places beyond ordinary sight, not an empty void.
Look at the birds of the air, for they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into storehouses; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they?
Matthew 6:26 · SDVThe birds remain active in the air, their lives held within the care of the heavenly Father.
He rose that night and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford Jabbok.
Genesis 32:22 · SDV

The verb translated “passeth” is ⁨עֹבֵר⁩ (ʿōvēr), from ⁨עבר⁩ (ʿ-b-r), the same root behind “passed over” here. Jacob crosses a ford on land; Psalm 8 places that crossing action in the sea, where living routes run beneath the surface.
