King James wording
King James Version
As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire;THE KEY
The Hebrew תִּבְעַר (tiv’ar, “burns”) nearly echoes יַעַר (ya’ar, “forest”), making the sound itself carry the fire into the landscape.
THE MEANING
The image puts ruin in motion: fire burns through the forest, and flame takes the mountains too. Its reach fills the scene, from the trees to the high terrain.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that what is vast is beyond destruction: the mountains themselves are in the flame’s reach.
THE ROOT
תִּבְעַר
tiv'ar
GROWS FROM
בער
b-ʿ-r
To burn or consume; in some forms, to clear away or purge.
“burns” in this verse is tiv'ar. The same root describes the wood burning here and, in other forms, something being purged or cleared away. The image holds burning and removal together: what the fire reaches is consumed.
ALSO GROWS
tiv'ar: Burns or catches as fire.
תִּבְעַר
This is the verb used for the wood; its sound nearly echoes יַעַר (ya’ar), “forest.”
uvi'arta: You shall purge or remove.
וּבִעַרְתָּ
This form uses the same root for clearing something away, linking the fire’s consuming action with removal.
תְּלַהֵט
telahēt
GROWS FROM
להט
l-h-ṭ
To blaze or flare; a flame’s burning force.
“kindles” in this verse is telahēt. The Hebrew verb shares its root with לַהַט (lahat, “flame”), the word used in Genesis for the flaming sword at Eden. The English forms look unrelated, while Hebrew keeps them in one word-family.
ALSO GROWS
telahēt: It blazes or sets something aflame.
תְּלַהֵט
This is the verb describing the flame taking hold of the mountains.
lahat: Flame or blaze.
לַהַט
This noun appears in Genesis 3:24, where a flame marks the guarded way to the tree of life.
THE PATTERN
Fire becomes an image of destruction that spreads from combustible matter until it takes hold across a whole terrain.
For wickedness burns as the fire; it shall devour the briers and thorns, and kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall rise like the lifting of smoke.Even so the tongue is a small limb, and it lifts its neck over great things. Look how great a forest a little fire kindles! But I will visit you according to the fruit of your deeds, says the LORD. I will light a fire in its forest, and it shall eat everything around it.THE THREAD
So he drove out the man, and he pitched the cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and the flaming sword that turned every way would guard the way of the tree of life. The Hebrew verb תְּלַהֵט (telahēt, “sets ablaze”) and the noun לַהַט (lahat, “flame”) share the root להט (l-h-ṭ, “blaze”). Here the flame consumes the landscape; there, it marks a guarded boundary before the way to life.
