This verse in the King James

King James wording
They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.

The verse’s destination is not simply more strength but being seen: the repeated Hebrew ⁨חַיִל⁩ (ḥayil, strength) carries the traveler toward a verb from ⁨רָאָה⁩ (rāʾāh, see).

You move from one measure of capacity into another; strength is a passage with successive stages. At the end, each person appears before God in Zion, the verb also carries the sense of being seen. Movement and arrival belong to the same picture.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that you must possess all your strength at once: the verse pictures strength as successive measures along a path.

חַיִל

ḥayil

GROWS FROM

ח־י־ל

Force, strength, or capacity.

The Hebrew repeats ⁨חַיִל⁩ (ḥayil, strength) on both sides of “to,” making the movement pass from one measure of capacity to another. This word can also name armies and resources, so the strength here can hold more than physical vigor.

ALSO GROWS

ḥayil: Army or host

חַיִל

The same force word can describe strength gathered into an army, widening the verse’s sense of capacity beyond individual stamina.

ḥayil: Wealth or resources

חַיִל

Strength can also mean resources, so the phrase can suggest capacity that unfolds along the journey.

יֵרָאֶה

yērāʾeh

GROWS FROM

ר־א־ה

To see or perceive; in this form, to appear or be seen.

“appears” in this verse is yērāʾeh. The verb translated “appeareth” comes from ⁨רָאָה⁩ (rāʾāh, see), so the arrival also carries the sense of coming into view. The journey of strength ends with each person seen before God.

ALSO GROWS

rāʾāh: To see or perceive

רָאָה

This basic sense reveals the seeing inside the verse’s word for appearing.

marʾeh: Sight or appearance

מַרְאֶה

This related word carries the same root into what is seen, echoing the verse’s movement into view.

Strength unfolds along a path that brings the traveler before God.

God, who girds me with strength, sets my way whole.
Psalm 18:32 · SDVStrength is pictured as something God supplies and girds around the traveler.
But those who wait upon the LORD exchange their strength; they rise on wings like eagles; they run and do not tire; they walk and do not faint.
Isaiah 40:31 · SDVStrength renews through successive movements: rising, running, and walking.
But we all, with uncovered faces, mirror the weight of the LORD, and are being reshaped into the same image, ever increasing in weight, even as from the breath of the LORD.
2 Corinthians 3:18 · SDVThe verse describes change unfolding from one measure to another as the Lord is beheld.
God, who girds me with strength, sets my way whole.
Psalm 18:32 · SDV

Psalm 18:32 uses ⁨חַיִל⁩ (ḥayil, strength), the same word Psalm 84 repeats as the travelers move from strength to strength. Here God girds the speaker with that strength, opening the journey as received capacity.
