King James wording
King James Version
A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.THE KEY
What looks like wickedness winning is the very pattern a surface-bound mind cannot read to its end.
THE MEANING
You can see a moment of flourishing and mistake it for the whole story. This verse names a failure of perception: a mind fixed on the surface cannot recognize where events are going. Its paired verbs move from knowing to discerning, the problem is not lack of information, but failure to see the shape of the whole.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that whatever prospers now must be sound or permanent.
THE ROOT
יָבִין
yāḇîn
GROWS FROM
בין
b-y-n
To distinguish, discern, or perceive relations and differences.
“discern” in this verse is yāḇîn. The verb yāḇîn comes from the root also seen in bên, “between”: understanding involves discerning what lies between appearances, not merely registering them. Its branch tevunah means discernment, so the verse describes a failure to see how events relate, the wicked flourishing just after this verse is not the whole pattern.
ALSO GROWS
bên: Between; in the space or relation separating things.
בֵּין
This branch gives understanding a sense of seeing distinctions and relations that a surface reading misses.
tevunah: Understanding or discernment.
תְּבוּנָה
The fool’s failure is not just missing a fact, but lacking the discernment to read the larger movement.
יָדַע
yādaʿ
GROWS FROM
ידע
y-d-ʿ
To know or recognize.
“does not perceive” in this verse is yādaʿ. The verse’s first verb names recognition, not merely possession of facts. The person sees what is happening but does not recognize its meaning within the larger movement.
ALSO GROWS
daʿat: Knowledge or knowing.
דַּעַת
This noun branch shows the same seed expressed as knowledge; the verse focuses on recognition that does not take place.
hôdîaʿ: To make something known or declare it.
הוֹדִיעַ
This form turns knowing outward into making known, highlighting the gap between what is visible and what is actually recognized.
THE PATTERN
A passing appearance cannot reveal the whole outcome; wisdom reads the trajectory beneath it.
Until I enter the set-apart places of God, and then I discern their aftermath. For like the grass they will soon be cut down, and like the green herb they will wither. But God said to him, Mindless one, this night your living soul will be demanded back from you. Then whose will those things be that you have made ready?THE THREAD
And I am brutish, and I do not perceive; I am as beasts with you.Psalm 73:22 repeats the same Hebrew word for “brutish” and a form of the same yada root for “know.” The echo lets the blindness be recognized from within: it names a narrowed way of seeing, not a fixed kind of person.
