King James wording
King James Version
The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.THE KEY
Zion is where the LORD is present, but no people can contain the greatness present there.
THE MEANING
The LORD is great in Zion now: divine presence is not an abstraction but is located among a people. Yet no people contains or outranks this greatness; every community stands beneath a presence that exceeds its bounds.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The LORD does not belong exclusively to one people, and no people can possess or contain him.
THE ROOT
גָּדוֹל
gadol
GROWS FROM
גדל
Grow, become great, increase.
English “great” can sound like a fixed rank, but גדל carries the sense of growing large. Its branch מִגְדָּל (migdal, tower) makes greatness spatially visible: here it is magnitude, not only status.
ALSO GROWS
gadal: To grow or become great.
גָּדַל
It reveals growth and enlargement beneath the verse’s description of the LORD as great.
migdal: Tower.
מִגְדָּל
This branch gives the root a visible form: something raised in scale and stature.
רָם
ram
GROWS FROM
רום
Rise, be high, be elevated.
“lifted above” in this verse is ram. The verse places the LORD’s greatness both in Zion and high above the peoples. The root רום carries that elevation, joining presence among people with a height no people can reach or contain.
ALSO GROWS
rum: To rise or be high.
רוּם
The verb behind “high” presents elevation as rising above what surrounds it.
marom: Height or high place.
מָרוֹם
This branch gives the root’s elevation a location, echoing the verse’s vertical image.
THE PATTERN
The LORD makes his presence known among people while remaining beyond any people’s measure.
A Song and Psalm for the sons of Korah. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, his set apart mountain. In the year that king Uzziah died, I saw the Lord settled upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Therefore God also lifted him high, and favored him with a name above every name.THE THREAD
The LORD is lifted high over all nations, and his weight above the heavens.Psalm 113:4 uses the same Hebrew word רָם (ram, high) as Psalm 99:2, so the elevation is carried by the same root in both verses. Psalm 99 names Zion as the place of the LORD’s greatness; Psalm 113 shows that greatness rising above every nation and even the heavens.
