King James wording
King James Version
And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;THE KEY
The voice becomes visible as seven lampstands: what reaches the ear reveals the shared forms that hold light in view.
THE MEANING
You hear a voice and turn toward it; what comes into view is seven golden lampstands, light held in a visible form. The verse lets hearing open into sight, and the next line identifies the stands as assemblies.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that a voice leaves no visible trace: when you turn toward this voice, you encounter a whole arrangement of lampstands.
THE ROOT
ἐπέστρεψα
epestrepsa
GROWS FROM
στρέφω
strephō
To turn, twist, or change direction.
The sentence repeats this root in “I turned” and “being turned,” so seeing follows a reorientation rather than a detached glance. The voice turns your perception until the lampstands come into view.
ALSO GROWS
epistrephō: Turn back, return.
ἐπιστρέφω
This related form makes the change of direction explicit: turning toward the voice opens into sight.
apostrephō: Turn away or aside.
ἀποστρέφω
The same root can describe turning away; here the direction is toward the voice, and the result is that the lampstands become visible.
λυχνίας
lychnias
GROWS FROM
λυχν-
lychn-
The Greek word family for a lamp and its stand: a lamp-bearing support.
The image names stands that hold lamps and place their light in view. The next verse identifies these seven lampstands as assemblies, joining visible light with the gathered people who carry it.
ALSO GROWS
lychnos: Lamp.
λύχνος
This is the light-bearing object associated with the stand John sees.
lychnia: Lampstand.
λυχνία
This is the singular form of the word used for the seven stands, bringing the structure that holds light into focus.
THE PATTERN
Light becomes visible as it is held by a form and placed among others.
And you make its seven lamps, and they raise its lamps, that they may shine upon its face.Nor do people kindle a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it shines for all who are in the house. The hidden thing of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and of the seven golden lampstands. The seven stars are the messengers of the seven assemblies, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven assemblies.THE THREAD
Remember, then, from where you have fallen, and turn, and do the first works; but if not, I come to you quickly and will move your lampstand from its place, unless you turn.“Candlestick” is the same Greek word, λυχνία (lychnia), as the lampstands John sees. The shared word makes the image consequential: a lampstand can be removed from its place.
