This verse in the King James

King James wording
And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

The force that cannot prevail loses its foothold: no place remains for it to occupy.

The vision presents the dragon’s forces as unable to overcome and without a place in heaven. Their defeat reaches beyond losing a contest: the room they occupied is gone.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that opposition’s foothold is permanent simply because it is present now.

ἴσχυσαν

íschysan

GROWS FROM

ἰσχυ-

ischy-

to have strength, be capable, prevail

“did not have the strength” in this verse is íschysan. The Greek verb names having strength or being able, so this is more than a score: the force cannot prevail. The next clause pairs that failure with lost place, showing inability and loss of foothold as one movement.

ALSO GROWS

ischýs: Strength or might

ἰσχύς

This noun shares the verb’s stem, revealing the strength that fails to carry the dragon’s forces through.

ischyrós: Strong, powerful

ἰσχυρός

This related adjective makes the contrast vivid: the verse describes a force that does not succeed, however strong it may seem.

τόπος

tópos

GROWS FROM

τοπ-

top-

place, location, room

⁨τόπος⁩ can name a place, room, or opportunity, so the image carries more than geography. The same noun appears in Ephesians 4:27, where the KJV says “give place to the devil,” making the lost place here legible as lost room to act.

ALSO GROWS

topikós: Relating to a particular place

τοπικός

The word preserves the locational sense of ⁨τόπος⁩: a place is a defined domain that can be occupied or left.

topographía: A description or mapping of a place

τοπογραφία

This word makes the spatial image concrete: ⁨τόπος⁩ is something with a position that can be identified, and here no position remains for the dragon’s forces.

Opposing power can lose both its ability to prevail and the place it occupies.

Yet a little while, and the wicked will not be. You will look closely at his place, and he will not be.
Psalm 37:10 · SDVThe verse joins the end of the wicked with the disappearance of the place once associated with them.
And he said to them, I watched the Adversary fall like lightning from the heavens.
Luke 10:18 · SDVThe image of falling from heaven presents opposing power losing its position.
Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world is thrown out.
John 12:31 · SDVThe prince’s authority is answered by removal: the one who held a place is cast out.
Nor give ground to the Slanderer.
Ephesians 4:27 · SDV

The same Greek noun appears in both verses: ⁨τόπος⁩ (tópos, “place, room”). Ephesians names a place granted to the Slanderer; Revelation shows the dragon’s host with no place remaining in heaven, making the shared word an image of foothold withdrawn.
