King James wording
King James Version
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.THE KEY
The crowns display power, but the blasphemous name on the heads exposes the nature of the authority they represent.
THE MEANING
The vision shows authority rising from the sea and gathering visible power in seven heads and ten crowned horns. Its blasphemous name discloses the character of that power: it speaks against God even as it wears authority. The verse keeps public might and divine truth distinct in the reader’s present world.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A visible crown proves that a power speaks for God. The verse exposes that confidence: the authority on display bears a blasphemous name.
THE ROOT
ὄνομα
onoma
GROWS FROM
ὀνοματ-
onomat-
A name or designation that discloses identity, character, or authority.
The name on the heads is more than a label: it reveals the nature carried by this power. Joined to blasphemy, the name makes that nature public.
ALSO GROWS
onomazō: To name, call, or designate.
ὀνομάζω
Naming gives an identity a public voice, as the beast’s name does here.
eponomazō: To call by a name or surname.
ἐπονομάζω
This related naming word shows how a name can be assigned as an identifying mark.
βλασφημία
blasphēmia
GROWS FROM
βλασφημ-
blasphēm-
Injurious or slanderous speech; reproach.
“wounding speech” in this verse is blasphēmia. Blasphemy here is not merely a hidden attitude: it is the speech or claim attached to the beast’s heads. The name tells you what kind of authority is being displayed.
ALSO GROWS
blasphēmeō: To speak slanderously or blaspheme.
βλασφημέω
The verb makes explicit that blasphemy is speech directed against someone’s honor.
blasphēmos: Slanderous or blasphemous.
βλάσφημος
This adjective describes the character carried by the name placed upon the heads.
διαδήματα
diadēmata
GROWS FROM
διαδημ-
diadēm-
A band bound around the head, a royal diadem.
“crowns” in this verse is diadēmata. The horns wear the marks of sovereignty, making power visible as something displayed. Beside the blasphemous name, those marks show that a crown alone cannot certify the nature of its authority.
ALSO GROWS
diadēma: A diadem or royal headband.
διάδημα
This is the singular form of the crowns worn on the beast’s horns.
diadeō: To bind around.
διαδέω
The related verb evokes a band encircling the head, an outward sign of authority.
THE PATTERN
In these visions, beastly rule emerges from waters identified with peoples and displays its nature through claims that defy God.
And four great living ones came up from the sea, each changed from the other. So he carries me away in breath into the wilderness, and I perceive a woman sitting upon a scarlet beast, full of names that speak harm, having seven heads and ten horns. And he says to me, The waters that you perceived, where the harlot sits, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.THE THREAD
I have made your nature visible to the people you gave me out of the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have guarded your word. The Greek word translated “name” is ὄνομα (onoma) in both verses. Jesus speaks of a name being manifested; Revelation’s blasphemous name likewise makes the nature of the authority it marks visible.
