This verse in the King James

King James wording
And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

Pain can be real without becoming a turn: the body is afflicted while the works remain unchanged.

Pain and sores stand beside an unchanged course: the sufferers speak against God and do not turn from their works. The verse holds a stark distinction for the reader now: being wounded is real, but suffering alone does not change what a person continues to do.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that pain automatically makes someone change; here, pain and refusal to turn from one’s works occupy the same moment.

μετενόησαν

metenoēsan

GROWS FROM

⁨μετανοέω⁩ (metanoeō), formed with ⁨μετά⁩ (meta) and ⁨νοέω⁩ (noeō)

To change one’s mind or turn; ⁨νοέω⁩ means to think or perceive.

“do not turn from” in this verse is metenoēsan. The refusal is more than a lack of remorse: the verb names the absence of a turn in their thinking or direction. Pain and sores are present, but their works remain untouched; suffering does not itself become transformation.

ALSO GROWS

metanoia: turning, change of mind

μετάνοια

The related noun names the change of direction that is absent here, showing that pain and turning are not the same thing.

noeō: to think, perceive

νοέω

This base verb brings perception into the word’s formation: the turn involves a changed apprehension, not pain alone.

ἔργων

ergōn

GROWS FROM

ἔργον

ergon

Work, deed, or action.

“Deeds” can sound like a list of completed acts, while ⁨ἔργον⁩ also carries the sense of work or activity. The verse says they do not turn from their works, locating the refusal in what they do, not only in what they feel.

ALSO GROWS

ergazomai: to work, do

ἐργάζομαι

This verb shares the work-family and makes the active quality of their works visible.

energeia: working, activity, operation

ἐνέργεια

This related word also carries the sense of activity, echoing the continuing course from which they do not turn.

Affliction does not itself turn a person away from their works; the response to pain can remain hardened.

Why should you still be struck? You keep adding a turning aside. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
Isaiah 1:5 · SDVRepeated striking and worsening revolt appear together, showing that affliction alone does not produce a turn.
And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder had stopped, he added yet more to missing the mark, and made his heart heavy, he and his servants.
Exodus 9:34 · SDVEven after the storm ceases, Pharaoh hardens his heart and continues in wrongdoing.
And the rest of the men who are not killed by these blows still do not turn from the works of their hands, that they should not bow down to demons and idols of gold, and of silver, and of bronze, and of stone, and of wood, which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk.
Revelation 9:20 · SDVThe verse directly echoes this refusal: the plagues do not turn people from the works of their hands.
Turn around, then, and turn back, so that your shortcomings may be wiped away, and the times of breathing again may come from the face of the LORD.
Acts 3:19 · SDV

Acts uses the same Greek verb family translated “repented” in Revelation 16:11: here the turn is urged, while there the afflicted remain with their works. Turning is paired with being turned and with sins being blotted out, showing a change of direction that pain alone does not guarantee.
