This verse in the King James

King James wording
And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

The messenger’s arrival does not merely bring a message; the weight of his presence lights the earth itself.

A messenger descends with authority, and the earth is illuminated by the weight of his presence. The ground beneath your life is not beyond that light; what the messenger carries makes the whole field visible.

ἐφωτίσθη

ephōtisthe

GROWS FROM

φῶς

phōs

Light; that which makes visible.

“lit” in this verse is ephōtisthe. The Greek verb ⁨φωτίζω⁩ (phōtizō, illuminate) presents the earth as receiving light, not producing it. The whole ground is reached by what arrives from above.

ALSO GROWS

phōtizō: Illuminate, bring to light

φωτίζω

This is the verb behind “was lightened”; it shows the earth receiving illumination.

phōtismos: Illumination, light

φωτισμός

This related word names the illumination itself, keeping the focus on what becomes visible.

δόξα

doxa

GROWS FROM

⁨δοκ-⁩/⁨δοξ-⁩ (dok-/dox-)

The word family concerns what is thought, regarded, or recognized; here, doxa carries the sense of weight, the substantial presence that fills perception.

English “glory” can sound like an honorific, but ⁨δόξα⁩ (doxa, weight) names the presence whose substance illuminates the earth. Here weight and light meet: what is substantial becomes perceptible across the whole ground.

ALSO GROWS

dokeō: Think, consider, seem

δοκέω

This related verb concerns what is regarded or perceived, echoing a presence that becomes unmistakable.

doxazō: Honor, glorify

δοξάζω

To honor this presence is to recognize its weight.

The presence that comes from above makes the earthly field visible by carrying its own light.

And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the weight of God lights it, and the Lamb is its lamp.
Revelation 21:23 · SDV

The Greek verb ⁨φωτίζω⁩ (phōtizō, illuminate) and noun ⁨δόξα⁩ (doxa, weight) appear together again: the city is lit by the weight of God’s presence. Revelation 18:1 opens onto this fuller image, where that illumination fills the city itself.
