King James wording
King James Version
And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;THE KEY
The “two-edged” sword is literally “two-mouthed,” picturing the speaker’s word as a blade.
THE MEANING
The verse places you before the one who speaks to the assembly through its messenger, holding a sharp sword. The phrase “with two edges” carries the image of two mouths, joining the blade’s force to the speaker’s utterance.
THE ROOT
δίστομον
distomon
GROWS FROM
στομ- (στόμα)
Mouth; opening.
“two mouths” in this verse is distomon. The adjective translated “with two edges” is δίστομος, literally “two-mouthed,” built from “twice” and στόμα, “mouth.” English keeps the blade but hides the mouth-image, which Revelation 1:16 makes explicit by placing this same sword at the speaker’s mouth.
ALSO GROWS
stoma: Mouth; opening.
στόμα
Revelation 1:16 says the sword comes from the speaker’s mouth, making the image inside “two-mouthed” visible.
stomion: Mouthpiece; also an edge or blade of a sword.
στόμιον
This word carries mouth-language into the vocabulary of a blade, holding speech and cutting edge together.
THE PATTERN
Scripture pictures the spoken word as a blade that penetrates and exposes.
He has set my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he has hidden me, and set me as a polished arrow; in his quiver he has hidden me.For the word of God is living and working, and sharper than any two-edged sword, reaching through even to the dividing of living soul and breath, of joints and marrow, and it separates the inward movements and thoughts of the heart. He holds in his right hand seven stars, and from his mouth comes a sharp, two-edged sword, and his face is like the sun shining in its power.THE THREAD
He holds in his right hand seven stars, and from his mouth comes a sharp, two-edged sword, and his face is like the sun shining in its power. The same Greek adjective describes the sword in both verses. Here, the sword comes from the speaker’s mouth, revealing the mouth-image carried by “two-edged.”
