King James wording
King James Version
Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.THE KEY
Memory becomes turning through the first works, and the lampstand’s threatened movement shows that a witness can lose its place.
THE MEANING
Remembering how far you have fallen opens into a turn, and that turn becomes visible in the first works. The threatened removal of the lampstand makes the consequence communal and concrete: a light-bearing place can be lost.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that remembering an earlier devotion, or feeling regret about its loss, is itself a return; the verse binds turning to renewed action.
THE ROOT
μετανοήσῃς
metanoēsēs
GROWS FROM
μετά + νοέω (meta + noeō)
A turn or change in perception and direction of thought.
The verb names a turn, not merely a feeling of regret. Here that reorientation immediately takes visible form in the first works.
ALSO GROWS
noeō: Perceive, understand
νοέω
This component of the verb connects turning with a changed way of seeing.
metanoia: Turning, change of mind
μετάνοια
This related noun carries the same turn that the verse joins to renewed action.
ἔργα
erga
GROWS FROM
ἔργον
ergon
Work, deed, something done.
The first works are acts, not only a remembered disposition. They give the returning turn a visible, enacted form.
ALSO GROWS
ergazomai: Work, accomplish
ἐργάζομαι
This related verb makes the link between turning and doing explicit.
energeia: Activity, operation
ἐνέργεια
This related noun points to what is actively at work, echoing the verse’s insistence on deeds.
κινήσω
kinēsō
GROWS FROM
κινέω
kineō
Move, set in motion.
“move” in this verse is kinēsō. The verb carries the sense of moving something from its place. The warning is about the displacement of the lampstand, making the loss concrete and public.
ALSO GROWS
kinēsis: Movement, motion
κίνησις
This noun names the movement contained in the warning.
kinētos: Movable
κινητός
This related adjective underscores that the lampstand’s place is not treated as fixed.
THE PATTERN
Turning becomes visible in restored action, and a witness that abandons its first actions risks losing its place.
Thus says the LORD, Stand upon the ways and look, and ask for the paths of the ages. Where is the good way? Walk in it, and you will find a place to settle for your living souls. But they said, We will not walk in it.Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets called out, saying, Thus says the LORD of hosts, Turn now from your evil ways and from your evil doings, but they did not hear and respond, nor bend their ear to me, says the LORD.Let your light shine like this before people, that they may perceive your good works and give weight to your Father in the heavens.THE THREAD
The hidden thing of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and of the seven golden lampstands. The seven stars are the messengers of the seven assemblies, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven assemblies. The same Greek word, λυχνία (lychnia, lampstand), appears in both verses. Revelation 1:20 identifies the lampstands as the seven assemblies, so the threatened movement in 2:5 touches a community’s place as a bearer of light.
