This verse in the King James

King James wording
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

The tree once guarded from human reach becomes a gift to the one who overcomes.

You are addressed as someone able to hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. The one who overcomes is given food from the tree of life in God’s paradise: life is nourishment offered to receive, not an abstract promise. The verse holds that gift open to you now.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that Eden’s closed way to the tree of life is the final word is undone: here, the tree becomes a gift to the one who overcomes.

νικῶντι

nikōnti

GROWS FROM

νικ-

nik-

To conquer or prevail.

“overcomes” in this verse is nikōnti. This is the same verb used when Jesus says, “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). The promise here joins overcoming not to a trophy, but to receiving life.

ALSO GROWS

nikē: victory

νίκη

Names the victory contained in the same word family as overcoming.

nikētēs: conqueror, victor

νικητής

Names the one who prevails, the person addressed by the promise.

ξύλου

xylou

GROWS FROM

ξύλ-

xyl-

Wood; a tree.

The word ⁨ξύλον⁩ (xylon, “tree” or “wood”) names both a living tree and wood. Scripture uses this same word for the “tree” on which Jesus is hanged (Galatians 3:13), letting the promised tree of life echo across the Bible’s imagery of wood.

ALSO GROWS

xylinos: wooden

ξύλινος

Carries the same word-family from a tree to something made of wood.

xylokopos: woodcutter

ξυλοκόπος

Keeps the root’s concrete sense of wood visible beneath the English “tree.”

ζωῆς

zōēs

GROWS FROM

ζω-

zō-

To live; living life.

The tree’s life is something the overcomer is given to eat, so life here is nourishment to partake in, not merely an abstract state. The same word family can describe both the living and the giving of life.

ALSO GROWS

zōn: living, alive

ζῶν

Shows the root describing life as a living reality.

zōopoieō: make alive, give life

ζωοποιέω

Shows the same family reaching from life itself to the giving of life.

Scripture presents the life God gives as nourishment to receive.

And out of the ground the LORD God caused to sprout every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowing good and evil.
Genesis 2:9 · SDVThe tree of life stands in a garden where trees are given as food.
I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he shall live for the ages, and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
John 6:51 · SDVLife is pictured as bread given to be eaten.
In the middle of its broad way, and on either bank of the river, is the tree of life, bearing twelve fruits, giving back its fruit with each moon. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
Revelation 22:2 · SDVThe tree of life bears fruit and its leaves bring healing.
In the middle of its broad way, and on either bank of the river, is the tree of life, bearing twelve fruits, giving back its fruit with each moon. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
Revelation 22:2 · SDV

The same tree-of-life phrase returns in Revelation’s closing vision, where the tree bears fruit and its leaves bring healing. That image opens this promise further: the gift is nourishment and restoration in God’s renewed garden.
