This verse in the King James

King James wording
And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.

Seeing and hearing the revelation do not make its messenger the one worthy of the bow.

You can see and hear what is revealed and still mistake the messenger for the one who deserves your bow. The verse places genuine perception beside misdirected reverence: the messenger shows the vision, yet remains a messenger. Your response can be real and still have its object corrected.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A messenger who reveals something true must receive the reverence due to the revelation itself.

προσκυνῆσαι

proskynēsai

GROWS FROM

προσκυν-

proskyn-

To bow down toward someone; to pay homage.

“bow down” in this verse is proskynēsai. The Greek verb gives “worship” the force of a bodily bow, made visible here by falling at the messenger’s feet. The next verse redirects that same posture to God: the question is not whether John bows, but before whom.

ALSO GROWS

proskynēsis: Bowing, worship

προσκύνησις

Names the act itself, keeping the physical posture in view.

proskynētēs: One who bows; a worshipper

προσκυνητής

Names the person by the posture they take, not by what they have seen or heard.

ἀγγέλου

angelou

GROWS FROM

ἀγγελ-

angel-

Messenger; one associated with announcing or delivering a message.

The one called an angel here is identified by his role: he shows John the things entrusted to him. The word’s message-bearing family keeps the distinction clear, the messenger carries what is shown; he is not the one to whom the bow is given.

ALSO GROWS

angellō: Announce, report

ἀγγέλλω

Shows the announcing action bound up with the messenger’s role.

angelia: Message, report

ἀγγελία

Names what a messenger carries, keeping attention on the message rather than its bearer.

The bow belongs to God, and a messenger’s honor stops short of receiving it.

For you shall not bow down to another god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
Exodus 34:14 · SDVThe bow is reserved for the LORD alone.
And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and bowed down before him. But Peter raised him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
Acts 10:25-26 · SDVPeter refuses the bow and names himself as a fellow human being.
And I fall at his feet to bow down before him. And he says to me, Look, do not do this. I am your fellow servant, and of your brothers who hold the witness of Jesus. Bow down before God, for the witness of Jesus is the breath of prophecy.
Revelation 19:10 · SDVLike the messenger here, this one stops the bow and directs it to God.
And he says to me, See that you do not. I am a fellow servant of yours, and of your brothers the prophets, and of those who guard the words of this scroll. Bow down to God.
Revelation 22:9 · SDV

The same verb for John’s bow is redirected one verse later: the messenger says not to bow to him, but to bow to God. He calls himself a fellow servant, so the posture remains while its object changes.
