This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

Twice the vision says “like”: the throne’s presence reaches sight through resemblance, not a direct portrait.

The seated One reaches your sight through likeness: jasper and sardius at the center, an emerald-like rainbow around the throne. Color and encirclement carry the vision of presence, while the verse leaves the One’s nature beyond these comparisons.

ὅρασις

horasis

GROWS FROM

⁨ὁράω⁩ (horáō), stem ⁨ὁρα-⁩ (hora-)

To see, behold, or perceive.

“in sight” in this verse is horasis. The verse twice says “like in appearance,” marking its images as resemblance rather than a description of substance. The vision lets sight approach the seated One through what can be seen, while leaving the One beyond the comparisons.

ALSO GROWS

horáō: To see, behold, perceive.

ὁράω

This verb sits beneath the repeated language of appearance: the scene is given as something perceived.

hórama: A vision; that which is seen.

ὅραμα

This related form names the seen display itself, linking the throne’s description to the act of vision.

κυκλόθεν

kyklóthen

GROWS FROM

⁨κύκλος⁩ (kýklos), stem ⁨κυκλ-⁩ (kykl-)

A circle or ring; something round.

“round about” in this verse is kyklóthen. The circle-root makes the rainbow part of the throne’s arrangement: it surrounds the center. The image holds the seated One and the colored boundary together, with the radiance encircling what the vision cannot describe directly.

ALSO GROWS

kýklos: A circle or ring.

κύκλος

This is the circular image carried by “round about,” making the rainbow an encircling presence.

kyklóō: To circle or encircle.

κυκλόω

This related verb gives the surrounding action that the verse assigns to the rainbow.

Divine presence becomes visible through radiance and precious stone, letting what exceeds sight be approached through likeness.

I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be the mark of a covenant between me and the earth.
Genesis 9:13 · SDVThe bow makes an unseen covenant visible through a sign in the sky.
As the look of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the glow round about. This was the look of the likeness of the weight of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one speaking.
Ezekiel 1:28 · SDVThe bow appears as brightness encircling the vision, echoing the rainbow around the throne.
Having the weight of God, her light is like a most precious stone, a jasper stone, clear as crystal.
Revelation 21:11 · SDVThe city’s light, like jasper, carries divine radiance through the likeness of a precious stone.
As the look of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the glow round about. This was the look of the likeness of the weight of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one speaking.
Ezekiel 1:28 · SDV

Here the bow surrounds the throne; Ezekiel names the bow as the appearance of brightness round about. In both visions, the encircling radiance reveals the encounter while the center remains beyond direct description.
