This verse in the King James

King James wording
And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

The four around the throne are named as living beings, with eyes before and behind: life here is saturated with sight.

You are shown a throne surrounded by an expanse clear as crystal. Around it are four living beings whose eyes face both forward and backward, a scene filled with watchfulness in every direction.

ζῷα

zōa

GROWS FROM

ζάω

zaō

to live, to be alive

“living creatures” in this verse is zōa. The noun beneath “beasts” is ⁨ζῷα⁩ (zōa, living beings), from ⁨ζάω⁩ (zaō, to live). Revelation uses a different noun, ⁨θηρίον⁩ (thērion, wild beast), for the hostile beast later in the book; here the word family foregrounds these creatures’ living quality.

ALSO GROWS

zōē: life

ζωή

This branch carries the same root into the word for life itself, keeping livingness at the center of the creatures’ description.

zōopoieō: make alive, give life

ζωοποιέω

The root also reaches into life-giving action, widening the image beyond animal form toward the activity of life.

Divine presence is framed by a clear expanse, like the clarity of the heavens.

And they saw the God of Israel, and under his feet there was a pavement of sapphire stone, and like the bone of heaven in its clearness.
Exodus 24:10 · SDVThe clear heavenly image appears beneath God’s feet as a sapphire-like pavement.
And the likeness of the expanse upon the heads of the living creatures was like the gleam of awe-inspiring ice, stretched out above their heads.
Ezekiel 1:22 · SDVA crystal-like firmament stretches above the living creatures, framing the vision with a clear expanse.
And I perceive a sea like glass mixed with fire, and those who overcame the beast, its image, its mark, and the number of its name, standing on that sea, holding the harps of God.
Revelation 15:2 · SDVThe glass sea appears again, with people standing upon it within the revealed scene.
And the likeness of the expanse upon the heads of the living creatures was like the gleam of awe-inspiring ice, stretched out above their heads.
Ezekiel 1:22 · SDV

Ezekiel places a crystal-like firmament above living creatures; Revelation sets a glass-like sea before the throne and living beings around it. The shared architecture lets the clear expanse and the watchful creatures appear as parts of one throne vision.
