King James wording
King James Version
And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.THE KEY
The altar’s fire is thrown into the earth, and the earth answers in sound, light, and rupture.
THE MEANING
Fire from the altar enters the earth, followed by voices, thunder, lightning, and shaking. What belongs to the sanctuary reaches the ground of your life as something heard, seen, and felt; the earth is no longer a silent backdrop.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The sacred remains sealed away from earthly life.
THE ROOT
σεισμός
seismos
GROWS FROM
σείω
seió
to shake, agitate, set in motion
English gives the event a noun, “earthquake”; Greek keeps it within a living family of shaking and agitation. The same root describes ground that trembles and a city stirred from its settled state, so the earth itself registers the altar-fire’s arrival.
ALSO GROWS
eseisthē: was shaken
ἐσείσθη
Matthew 27:51 uses this form for the earth’s quake as the temple veil splits, joining ground-shaking with a boundary opening.
seió: to shake, agitate
σείω
This verb carries the same motion as σεισμός: here, the altar-fire reaches the earth and the ground becomes part of the event.
THE PATTERN
When divine presence reaches the boundary between sanctuary and earth, creation responds with audible and physical upheaval.
And the temple of God in heaven is opened, and the ark of his covenant is perceived in his temple, and there are flashes, and voices, and thunders, and a shaking, and great hail. And on the third day, in the morning, there were thunders and flashes, and a heavy cloud upon the mount, and the sound of the ram's horn was very strong, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. And look, the hanging curtain of the temple was torn in two, from above to below, and the earth shook, and the rocks broke open.THE THREAD
And look, the hanging curtain of the temple was torn in two, from above to below, and the earth shook, and the rocks broke open. The Greek behind “the earth did quake” is ἐσείσθη (eseisthē), from σείω, the same shaking family named by σεισμός here. In Matthew the shaking accompanies the temple veil’s split; here altar-fire is cast into the earth and shaking follows, so the rupture is felt in the ground.
