This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

Here, being loosed is not rescue: release sets a measured killing in motion.

The vision shows four messengers released at a precise appointed span, with the explicit task of killing a third of humanity. Its horror stays explicit, while its timing and reach are bounded: an hour, a day, a month, a year, and one third.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the assumption that release necessarily means relief: here, loosing begins a deadly act.

ἐλύθησαν

elythēsan

GROWS FROM

λυ-

ly-

To loosen, unbind, release.

“untied” in this verse is elythēsan. The verb names a release of restraint, but it does not say that what is released brings relief. Here, loosing opens the way for lethal violence.

ALSO GROWS

apolyō: Release, dismiss.

ἀπολύω

This compound carries the same loosening verb into the sense of releasing or sending away; in Revelation, release sets the agents into action.

analyō: Depart, set out.

ἀναλύω

The same root appears in a verb for departure, linking loosening with movement from restraint into motion.

ἡτοιμασμένοι

hētoimasmenoi

GROWS FROM

ἑτοιμ-

hetoim-

Ready, prepared.

“prepared” in this verse is hētoimasmenoi. The word presents the messengers as already made ready for a particular span, not as acting by accident. The counted hour, day, month, and year makes preparation part of the vision’s terrible structure.

ALSO GROWS

hetoimos: Ready, prepared.

ἑτοῖμος

This adjective carries the same readiness at the heart of “prepared,” making the messengers’ condition explicit.

hetoimasia: Preparation, readiness.

ἑτοιμασία

This noun names the state of being made ready, echoing how the verse joins readiness to a fixed time.

What is appointed is marked by time and bounds rather than left without measure.

Since his days are cut, and the number of his months is with you, you set his carved limits that he cannot pass over.
Job 14:5 · SDVThe verse places a life within a measured span and appointed bounds.
And he said, "Behold, I will make you perceive what will be in the latter end of the heat, for it is for the appointed meeting of the end."
Daniel 8:19 · SDVEven indignation reaches its end at a time appointed.
And he made from one blood every nation of humankind to settle upon all the face of the earth, marking out their fitted seasons and setting the boundary stones of their dwelling.
Acts 17:26 · SDVTimes and habitation both appear as determined and bounded.
The one who had died came out, his hands and feet bound in strips of cloth, and a cloth wrapped his face. Jesus said to them, Untie him, and let him go.
John 11:44 · SDV

“Loose” in John and “were loosed” here share the Greek root ⁨λυ-⁩ (ly-, “loosen, release”). In John, release unbinds a man from his graveclothes; in Revelation, release sends agents into a killing, showing that the word names the opening of restraint while the outcome depends on what is released.
