This verse in the King James

King James wording
For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

Zeal for God can be real while perception of God is missing, the verse separates fervor from knowing.

Your zeal for God can be sincere and still fail to perceive God clearly. The verse distinguishes intensity from knowing: fervor is present, yet it does not move in step with perception. The gap is deeper than missing information; it is a gap in recognition.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Strong religious feeling does not prove clear perception of God.

ἐπίγνωσιν

epignōsin

GROWS FROM

γνω-

gnō-

Know, recognize, perceive.

“full knowing” in this verse is epignōsin. The Greek points beyond collected information toward recognizing and perceiving. The verse holds this kind of knowing beside real zeal, showing that fervor alone does not mean God is clearly perceived.

ALSO GROWS

ginōskō: Know, perceive.

γινώσκω

This related verb makes knowing an act of perception, not just possession of facts.

gnōsis: Knowledge.

γνῶσις

The noun shares the same base, connecting the verse’s knowledge to the wider family of knowing.

epiginōskō: Recognize, know fully.

ἐπιγινώσκω

This related verb brings out the recognition carried by the word for knowledge in the verse.

ζῆλον

zēlon

GROWS FROM

ζηλ-

zēl-

Eager ardor; fervor that can express itself as zeal or jealousy.

“a burning for God” in this verse is zēlon. The Greek word names genuine intensity, not a counterfeit devotion. Its range includes both zeal and jealousy, so heat by itself does not tell you whether that energy perceives rightly.

ALSO GROWS

zēloō: Be zealous, eager, or envious.

ζηλόω

The same ardor can become devoted eagerness or possessive envy; its intensity alone does not show its direction.

zēlōtēs: A zealous person.

ζηλωτής

The related noun names the person marked by this fervor, while the verse asks whether that fervor is joined to knowing.

Religious urgency is not the same as perceiving the God it seeks.

Also, a living soul without knowledge is not good, and whoever rushes with his feet misses the mark.
Proverbs 19:2 · SDVThis verse likewise shows that urgency without knowledge can move a person off course.
For I delight in faithful love and not slaughter, and the knowledge of God more than the ascending offerings.
Hosea 6:6 · SDVIt places knowing God above religious activity, as Romans separates zeal from knowledge.
You bow down to what you do not know. We bow down to what we know, for deliverance is from the Jews.
John 4:22 · SDVIt names worship without knowing as a real divide between religious action and perception.
For I delight in faithful love and not slaughter, and the knowledge of God more than the ascending offerings.
Hosea 6:6 · SDV

Hosea places knowledge of God above sacrifice; Romans exposes the same divide between religious fervor and knowing. In the Greek Septuagint, Hosea uses ⁨ἐπίγνωσις⁩ (epignōsis, recognition or knowing), the same word family as the Greek word translated “knowledge” here.
