This verse in the King James

King James wording
And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.

A root can outlive the visible tree, and from it rises the ruler in whom the nations place their hope.

The life of Jesse’s line is still rising in the one who reigns, and his reach includes peoples beyond its own boundaries. The verse places you inside an invitation that crosses inherited boundaries: the nations set their hope in him, and you are included among them.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that hope in the ruler belongs only to those descended from Jesse: the nations themselves are named among those who hope in him.

ῥίζα

rhiza

GROWS FROM

ῥιζ-

rhiz-

Root: the source from which growth draws life and the point that anchors it.

“root” in this verse is rhiza. ⁨ῥίζα⁩ makes the ruler’s rise continuous with what came before: he grows from the living source of Jesse’s line. The image holds hidden continuity and new growth together, what seems ended still sends life outward to the nations.

ALSO GROWS

rhizoō: To take root; to root or establish.

ῥιζόω

The same root describes taking root, showing that Jesse’s line carries life forward rather than appearing from nowhere.

arrhizos: Rootless; without a root.

ἄρριζος

Its rootless contrast makes the image vivid: Jesse’s root carries the anchoring source from which new growth can rise.

errizōmenoi: Rooted; firmly established.

ἐρριζωμένοι

This rooted form shows how the same word family can name a life held in place by its source.

ἄρχειν

archein

GROWS FROM

ἀρχ-

arch-

To begin, lead, or rule.

“rule” in this verse is archein. The Greek word for reigning belongs to the ⁨ἀρχ-⁩ family, where ruling and beginning share a linguistic root. His reign opens a new beginning that extends beyond Israel to the nations named in the verse.

ALSO GROWS

archē: Beginning, origin, or rule.

ἀρχή

The word links rule with a beginning, so this reign carries the sense of an order newly opening.

archōn: Ruler; one who leads.

ἄρχων

This related word names the one who leads, bringing the verse’s rising ruler into the same root family.

ἐλπιοῦσιν

elpiousin

GROWS FROM

ἐλπ-

elp-

Hope or expectation.

The Greek verb here is ⁨ἐλπίζω⁩ (elpizō, to hope or expect), so the KJV’s “trust” also carries expectation: the nations orient their future toward him. This is hope placed in a person, not merely an idea held in the mind.

ALSO GROWS

elpis: Hope; expectation.

ἐλπίς

The related noun names the hope the nations place in him.

elpizō: To hope; to expect.

ἐλπίζω

This verb form makes the nations’ trust an active expectation directed toward him.

A promise rooted in one family line widens into hope and belonging for every people.

And in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have heard and responded to my voice."
Genesis 22:18 · SDVThe promise takes shape through one family line yet reaches all the nations of the earth.
And in that day the root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; to him nations will seek, and his settling place will carry weight.
Isaiah 11:10 · SDVJesse’s root becomes a signal to the peoples, and the Gentiles seek toward it.
And they sing a new song, saying, Worthy are you to take the scroll and to untie its seals, for you were slaughtered and bought us for God with your blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
Revelation 5:9 · SDVThe song gathers people from every kindred, tongue, people, and nation around the slain one.
I, Jesus, send my messenger to bear witness to you of these things in the assemblies. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star.
Revelation 22:16 · SDV

The phrase “root of Jesse” shares the Greek noun ⁨ῥίζα⁩ (rhiza, root) with this self-description. Romans shows him rising from Jesse’s line; Revelation holds source and descendant together by calling him both David’s root and offspring.
