This verse in the King James

King James wording
For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you.

The verb behind “hindered” evokes cutting into a route, so an interrupted arrival does not by itself mean the desire to come is gone.

A desire to reach another person can be real while the way remains blocked. Delay names an interruption in arrival; by itself, it does not say the intention has vanished.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A delay in reaching someone does not by itself prove that the desire to be with them is absent.

ἐνεκοπτόμην

enekoptomēn

GROWS FROM

κόπτω

koptō

to cut, strike, or beat

“cut off” in this verse is enekoptomēn. The verb ⁨ἐγκόπτω⁩ (enkoptō), “to impede or hinder,” is built from ⁨κόπτω⁩ (koptō), “to cut or strike.” The cutting image makes the obstruction feel like an interruption in the way toward arrival, rather than an absence of desire.

ALSO GROWS

enkoptō: to cut into; impede or hinder

ἐγκόπτω

This is the verb in the verse: the route toward someone is interrupted.

ekkoptō: to cut out, cut off, or cut down

ἐκκόπτω

The same root can describe something being cut off, revealing the force behind an impeded way.

koptō: to strike or beat; also to lament

κόπτω

The root’s sense of striking shows how the word carries an image of force meeting movement.

Intended movement can be interrupted before it reaches its destination.

You were running well; who cut across your path, so that you would not yield to the truth?
Galatians 5:7 · SDVThe same verb pictures someone who was running well being hindered from continuing toward the truth.
For we wished to come to you, I, Paul, once and twice, but the Adversary cut across our way.
1 Thessalonians 2:18 · SDVThe same verb names a blocked journey while the wish to come remains explicit.
Likewise, you husbands, dwell with them knowing, giving value to the wife as to the weaker vessel, and as heirs together of the favor of life, so that your prayers are not cut off.
1 Peter 3:7 · SDVThe same verb describes prayer being obstructed, extending the pattern beyond travel.
For we wished to come to you, I, Paul, once and twice, but the Adversary cut across our way.
1 Thessalonians 2:18 · SDV

This verse uses the same verb for a wish to come that meets a hindrance. The parallel makes the distinction plain: obstruction names what stands in the way of arrival, not necessarily the absence of desire.
