This verse in the King James

King James wording
And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?

An absent outward mark can judge the marked person when the instruction is completed in one life and crossed in the other.

This verse places a naturally unmarked condition beside an instruction actually carried through. That lived completion exposes the contradiction of possessing both written instruction and its bodily sign while stepping beyond the instruction. What is visible on the body does not make the life’s movement invisible.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that possessing the outward sign and written instruction makes my contradiction unanswerable.

τελοῦσα

telousa

GROWS FROM

⁨τελ-⁩ (from ⁨τελέω⁩, teleō)

Bring to an end, complete, accomplish.

“completing instruction” in this verse is telousa. The Greek carries the sense of bringing something to its end or full effect. The verse locates the test in that completed action: an outward sign cannot substitute for the instruction reaching its purpose in a life.

ALSO GROWS

telos: End, goal, outcome.

τέλος

It shows completion as reaching an end or goal, not simply possessing instruction.

teleios: Complete, mature.

τέλειος

The same word family describes something brought to its full measure.

teleioō: Bring to completion.

τελειόω

This related verb makes explicit the movement from something begun to something completed.

παραβάτην

parabatēn

GROWS FROM

βαίνω

bainō

Go or step; in the compound used here, the movement is stepping beyond.

The Greek gives “transgressor” the image of someone stepping beyond a boundary. The verse sets two movements against each other: one person completes the instruction, while the marked person steps across it.

ALSO GROWS

anabainō: Go up, ascend.

ἀναβαίνω

The same root carries movement in a direction; here it helps reveal the action inside the word for transgression.

epibainō: Step upon, board.

ἐπιβαίνω

This branch also makes the shared root’s basic sense concrete: a step taken onto or across something.

φύσεως

physeōs

GROWS FROM

⁨φυ-⁩ (from ⁨φύω⁩, phyō)

Grow, come forth, bring forth.

“by nature” in this verse is physeōs. The word points to what comes forth naturally, as opposed to an added marker. Nature alone is not the verdict here; the verse pairs the unmarked condition with instruction brought to completion.

ALSO GROWS

phyō: Grow, bring forth.

φύω

This verb is the seed sense behind the word translated “nature.”

phyton: Plant; that which has grown.

φυτόν

It carries the same image of something that has come forth and grown.

physikos: Natural, belonging to nature.

φυσικός

This related adjective preserves the link between nature and what arises from it.

A visible claim is tested by what the instruction actually produces in action.

But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have pushed him away. The LORD does not see as the human sees. The human sees what is outside, but the LORD sees the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7 · SDVThe outward appearance does not settle what is true; the heart is also seen.
Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter into the governance of the heavens, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in the heavens.
Matthew 7:21 · SDVThe claim spoken aloud is measured alongside what the person actually does.
So speak, and so do, as those who will be judged by the instruction of freedom.
James 2:12 · SDVSpeech and action are held up to the instruction by which the life is judged.
For not the hearers of instruction are aligned before God, but the makers of instruction will be aligned.
Romans 2:13 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨νόμος⁩ (nomos, instruction), and this one places doing beside hearing. That shared word sharpens the comparison in verse 27: the outward mark does not decide whether the instruction is carried through.
