King James wording
King James Version
But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;THE KEY
What is counted to us rests on trusting the One who raises the dead.
THE MEANING
The reader is included in a reckoning that rests on trust in God, the one who raises Jesus our Lord from the dead. Here, trust is reliance on the raiser, and “imputed” names what is counted rather than something the reader manufactures. Jesus bears the name Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ, Yeshua, deliverance), from yasha (יָשַׁע, yasha, to deliver from narrowness into spaciousness), so deliverance is carried in the very name of the one raised.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A standing with God must be built by the reader before it can be counted.
THE ROOT
λογίζεσθαι
logizesthai
GROWS FROM
λογιζ-
logiz-
Reckon, count, account.
The word is accounting language: what is “imputed” is actively reckoned, and Romans 4 repeats this verb for what is counted. The repetition keeps the focus on what God counts in relation to trust, rather than on something the reader manufactures.
ALSO GROWS
logismos: A calculation or reasoning.
λογισμός
It shows the family’s connection to deliberate reckoning, not merely a vague impression.
logistēs: A reckoner or accountant.
λογιστής
This branch makes the verse’s accounting image concrete: something is entered into an account.
πιστεύουσιν
pisteuousin
GROWS FROM
πιστ-
pist-
Trust, reliance, firmness.
“lean our full weight on” in this verse is pisteuousin. The form describes people trusting, not holding a detached opinion. Its word-family joins trust with firmness, so reliance is placed in the God the verse names as the raiser of Jesus.
ALSO GROWS
pistis: Trust or reliance.
πίστις
The noun makes clear that “believe” here names a relation of trust, not only agreement with a claim.
pistos: Firm, steady, trustworthy.
πιστός
This branch shows the other side of reliance: trust rests on someone regarded as dependable.
ἐγείραντα
egeiranta
GROWS FROM
ἐγερ-
eger-
Wake, rouse, raise.
“raised” in this verse is egeiranta. The verb can mean waking or rousing as well as raising. The verse locates trust in the God whose action brings Jesus up from the condition called dead.
ALSO GROWS
egersis: A rising or raising; resurrection.
ἔγερσις
This noun carries the same raising action into the language of resurrection.
diegeirō: Rouse, awaken, stir up.
διεγείρω
This related verb preserves the root’s sense of waking or stirring something into action.
THE PATTERN
God’s reckoning can count trust toward righteousness and leave trespasses uncounted against a person.
And he leaned his weight on the LORD, and he counted it to him as alignment. For what does the scripture say? Abraham leaned his full weight on God, and it was counted to him for alignment. That God was in the Anointed One, exchanging the world back to himself, not counting their falls against them, and setting in us the word of exchange.THE THREAD
For what does the scripture say? Abraham leaned his full weight on God, and it was counted to him for alignment.“Counted” is the same Greek reckoning word as “imputed” here. The words “for us also” open that same reckoning outward, making the repeated root a signal of inclusion.
