King James wording
King James Version
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.THE KEY
The Son’s death brings reconciliation, and his life carries deliverance forward.
THE MEANING
Even where your story includes enmity toward God, reconciliation comes through the Son’s death. The verse then says “much more”: his living life is the means of your deliverance. Reconciliation and deliverance belong together, the first does not leave you to face what follows alone.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Reconciliation may bring you back to God, but what happens afterward depends on your own strength.
THE ROOT
ζωῇ
zōē
GROWS FROM
ζάω
zaō
To live, to be alive.
“By his life” names the living Son as the means of deliverance, so the verse reaches beyond the moment of his death. The same word family moves from ζάω (zaō, live) to ζωοποιέω (zōopoieō, make alive): life here is active and life-giving.
ALSO GROWS
zaō: Live, be alive
ζάω
This is the verb behind the life named in the verse; deliverance rests on the Son being alive.
zōopoieō: Make alive
ζωοποιέω
This related verb shows the life-root at work as an action that gives life.
καταλλαγέντες
katallagentes
GROWS FROM
καταλλάσσω
katallassō
To reconcile, changing a relationship from enmity toward restored relation.
“exchanged with God” in this verse is katallagentes. The word carries a change in the relationship itself: those described as enemies are brought into reconciliation. Its related word for “change” helps expose the movement English can hide inside a settled-sounding label.
ALSO GROWS
allassō: Change, alter
ἀλλάσσω
This related verb makes the change within reconciliation audible: the relationship no longer remains as it was.
katallagē: Reconciliation
καταλλαγή
Paul uses this related noun in the next verse, where reconciliation becomes a reason to rejoice.
σωθησόμεθα
sōthēsometha
GROWS FROM
σῴζω
sōzō
To deliver, rescue, or preserve from danger.
“delivered” in this verse is sōthēsometha. The verse’s final movement is deliverance: reconciliation is not the end of the sentence’s hope. It says this deliverance comes by the Son’s life, keeping rescue connected to the one who lives.
ALSO GROWS
sōtēria: Deliverance, rescue
σωτηρία
This noun names the rescue expressed here by the verb σῴζω (sōzō, deliver).
sōtēr: Deliverer, rescuer
σωτήρ
This related word names the one who brings deliverance, keeping the focus on the living Son as its means.
THE PATTERN
The Son’s life carries those joined to him through the reach of death.
But if the breath of him who raised Jesus from the dead makes its home in you, then he who raised the Anointed One from the dead will also make your death-bound bodies alive through his breath that makes its home in you.For as in Adam all die, so also in the Anointed One all will be made alive.Yet a little while, and the world no longer gazes upon me, but you gaze upon me, because I live and you also will live.THE THREAD
Yet a little while, and the world no longer gazes upon me, but you gaze upon me, because I live and you also will live.Romans says deliverance comes “by his life”; John gives that life-root a personal voice in “because I live.” The shared Greek verb family shows the Son’s life as the source from which the reader’s life follows.
