This verse in the King James

King James wording
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

The force that frees you is itself called a law: the breath of life becomes the governing power that displaces sin and death.

The breath of life in the Anointed One now releases you from the rule of missing and death. You are spoken of as already set free; life’s authority is active in you now. The verse gives death no final claim over your present.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that your failures and mortality are the final authority over you.

ἠλευθέρωσεν

ēleutherōsen

GROWS FROM

ἐλευθερ-

eleuther-

Free; unbound. The verb ⁨ἐλευθερόω⁩ means to set free.

“has set me free” in this verse is ēleutherōsen. The verb ⁨ἠλευθέρωσεν⁩ names an actual release from one governing force into another. Jesus, ⁨Ἰησοῦς⁩ (Iēsous), corresponds to ⁨יֵשׁוּעַ⁩ (Yeshua, deliverance), from ⁨יָשַׁע⁩ (yasha, deliver from narrowness into spaciousness), echoing the same movement.

ALSO GROWS

eleutheros: Free; not enslaved.

ἐλεύθερος

It names the person whose condition has changed through the release described here.

eleutheria: Freedom; liberty.

ἐλευθερία

It names the state that follows the freeing action.

eleutheroō: To set free; liberate.

ἐλευθερόω

This is the verb family behind the verse’s claim that you are made free.

πνεύματος

pneumatos

GROWS FROM

πνευ-

pneu-

The breath or blowing carried by the ⁨πνέω⁩ (pneō) family: to blow, to breathe.

“breath of life” in this verse is pneumatos. The Greek word ⁨πνεῦμα⁩ can carry the meanings breath, wind, and spirit. What the verse calls the Spirit of life is bound to the language of living breath: the release comes through life’s animating presence.

ALSO GROWS

pneuma: Breath, wind, spirit.

πνεῦμα

The same word family holds together the breath and Spirit named in this verse.

pneō: To blow; to breathe.

πνέω

This verb reveals the motion at the root of the breath-word family.

pnoē: Breath; a blowing.

πνοή

It carries the same breath-and-wind image into another Greek word.

ἁμαρτίας

hamartias

GROWS FROM

ἁμαρτ-

hamart-

To miss or fall short of the mark.

The word translated “sin” belongs to a family that also carries the sense of missing or falling short. Here that missing is named as a ruling force joined to death, while the breath of life releases you from its claim.

ALSO GROWS

hamartanō: To miss; to err.

ἁμαρτάνω

The verb makes visible the action beneath the noun translated “sin.”

hamartēma: A mistake; an error or offense.

ἁμάρτημα

This noun shows a particular instance of missing within the same word family.

hamartōlos: A sinner; one who misses.

ἁμαρτωλός

The family can describe a person through the pattern of missing that the verse says no longer governs you.

A life-giving power releases people from the ruling force that held them in bondage.

Therefore say to the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the loads of the Egyptians, and I will snatch you from their service, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments.
Exodus 6:6 · SDVThe LORD’s action brings people out from under bondage and releases them into freedom.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free.
John 8:36 · SDVThe Son’s freeing action replaces bondage with a freedom that holds.
Stand, then, in the freedom for which the Anointed One set us free, and do not be caught again in the yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1 · SDVThe freedom Christ gives breaks the yoke that once governed the person.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free.
John 8:36 · SDV

John’s “make you free” belongs to the same Greek verb family, ⁨ἐλευθερόω⁩, as Romans’ “made free.” Romans names the breath of life as the source of this release; John shows the freedom as something that holds.
