This verse in the King James

King James wording
It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.

The verse turns rank into its own reversal: the greater one’s place is beneath the one called lesser.

Here, the one counted greater is placed in service to the one counted lesser. Rank remains visible, but it does not guarantee command; the line sends subordination in the unexpected direction.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being first or older automatically entitles me to authority over the one who comes after.

δουλεύσει

douleusei

GROWS FROM

δουλ-

doul-

To serve as a slave; to be in subjection.

The stem behind “serve” carries the sense of being under another’s authority. Its branches name both the person in that position and the condition of bondage; here, the one ranked greater is placed beneath the younger.

ALSO GROWS

doulos: Servant; slave.

δοῦλος

Names the person who serves under another’s authority, giving the verse’s “serve” a sharper status reversal.

douleia: Slavery; bondage.

δουλεία

Names the condition of subjection that the verb can carry, showing how completely the expected hierarchy is overturned.

Scripture repeatedly places greatness in service and lets the expected order of rank reverse.

And the LORD said to her, Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall be parted from your innermost parts; the one people shall be stronger than the other people, and the great shall serve the small.
Genesis 25:23 · SDVThe same elder-to-younger reversal appears directly: precedence ends in service to the one ranked below.
It will not be so among you. But whoever wants to be great among you, let him be your servant.
Matthew 20:26 · SDVGreatness is expressed through taking the serving position among others.
But he emptied himself, taking the shape of a servant, and became in the likeness of humankind.
Philippians 2:7 · SDVThe one with the highest standing takes the form of a servant.
And the LORD said to her, Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall be parted from your innermost parts; the one people shall be stronger than the other people, and the great shall serve the small.
Genesis 25:23 · SDV

Romans repeats the Greek wording of this line, including the verb for “serve.” Genesis makes the reversal plain: the elder’s rank culminates in service to the younger.
