This verse in the King James

King James wording
Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:

The verse holds abundance and deliverance apart: a multitude can be counted like sea-sand while a remnant is brought through.

The verse places the multitude of Israel’s children beside a remnant that is delivered. Number and deliverance are not the same measure: the verse holds the promise in the portion brought through.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A vast number by itself guarantees that everyone in the multitude is delivered.

σωθήσεται

sōthēsetai

GROWS FROM

σῴζω

sōzō

Deliver, rescue, preserve, bring safely through.

The form here means “will be delivered”: the remnant is brought through. In this Greek word family, the verb, the deliverer, and deliverance share a root, keeping the focus on being carried out of danger.

ALSO GROWS

sōzō: Rescue, preserve, bring safely through.

σῴζω

This is the verb’s base form and names the deliverance the remnant receives.

sōtēr: One who rescues or brings through.

σωτήρ

The same word family names the one who brings deliverance.

sōtēria: Rescue or deliverance.

σωτηρία

The noun names the outcome carried by the verb in this verse.

ὑπόλειμμα

hypóleimma

GROWS FROM

λείπω

leípō

Leave, be left, remain.

“what is left behind” in this verse is hypóleimma. The Greek word for “remnant” is what remains or is left behind. Its root also appears in words for what is lacking, so the remnant carries both residue and absence: what remains after the multitude is not carried through as a whole.

ALSO GROWS

leimma: What remains; a remainder.

λεῖμμα

It names the portion left after the whole is not present.

kataleípō: Leave or abandon something behind.

καταλείπω

It makes the root’s sense of what is left behind explicit.

elleípō: Be short of, or fall short of, something.

ἐλλείπω

The same root family can describe what is absent as well as what remains.

Deliverance can carry a remnant through when the multitude does not pass through together.

For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them will turn back. The running out, decreed, will overflow with alignment.
Isaiah 10:22 · SDVThe image of sea-sand abundance is set beside a remnant that returns.
who once refused to yield, while the slowness to heat of God waited in the days of Noah, as the ark was being built, in which few, eight living souls, were delivered through water.
1 Peter 3:20 · SDVA few are carried through while the judgment overtakes the many.
So also now, in this present season, there is a remnant left behind, picked out by favor.
Romans 11:5 · SDVThe remnant remains present even when the larger people is in view.
And she will bring forth a son, and you will call his name Jesus, the LORD's deliverance, for he will deliver his people from their missing.
Matthew 1:21 · SDV

Romans uses ⁨σωθήσεται⁩ (sōthēsetai, “will be delivered”); Matthew uses ⁨σώσει⁩ (sōsei, “will deliver”). Both forms come from ⁨σῴζω⁩ (sōzō, “deliver”), linking the remnant brought through here with the deliverance named in Jesus’ nature.
