This verse in the King James

King James wording
Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:

The word has not fallen; what falls away is the assumption that everyone descended from Israel therefore embodies Israel.

When what you see makes God’s promise seem to have failed, this verse holds the promise apart from every outward claim to it. The word has not fallen away; coming from Israel and being Israel do not name the same thing. The distinction remains alive wherever inherited belonging is mistaken for the promise itself.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that descent or inherited belonging automatically means the promise is present in someone.

ἐκπέπτωκεν

ekpéptōken

GROWS FROM

πίπτω

⁨πίπτω⁩ (píptō): to fall. With the prefix ⁨ἐκ-⁩, the verb carries the sense of falling out, falling away, or failing.

“fallen away” in this verse is ekpéptōken. English renders this as an abstract result, but the Greek pictures God’s word as something that might fall away. The verse says it has not fallen; the distinction between descent from Israel and being Israel does not mean the promise has collapsed.

ALSO GROWS

ekpíptō: Fall out, fall away, or fail.

ἐκπίπτω

This compound uses the same ⁨πίπτω⁩ root as the verse’s ⁨ἐκπέπτωκεν⁩ and preserves its image of falling away.

katapíptō: Fall down or collapse.

καταπίπτω

The compound keeps the same ⁨πίπτω⁩ root and makes the image of falling concrete: a collapse, rather than an abstract loss of effect.

Scriptural belonging is not exhausted by descent; the promise gives identity beyond lineage alone.

And God said to Abraham, Do not let it be bad in your eyes because of the boy, and because of your servant woman. In all that Sarah says to you, hear and respond to her voice, for in Isaac your seed shall be called.
Genesis 21:12 · SDVAmong Abraham’s descendants, the promise names Isaac’s line as the one through which the seed is called.
They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham.
John 8:39 · SDVThe claim of descent from Abraham is distinguished from carrying the identity that claim names.
Perceive therefore that those who come out of trust, these are the children of Abraham.
Galatians 3:7 · SDVAbraham’s children are identified through trust, extending the promise’s family beyond ancestry.
For all flesh is as grass, and all its weight is as the blossom of grass. The grass dries, and the blossom falls.
1 Peter 1:24 · SDV

The Greek verb behind “falleth away” is ⁨ἐκπίπτω⁩ (ekpíptō), “to fall away,” from the same root as ⁨ἐκπέπτωκεν⁩ in Romans 9:6. Here the flower falls; Romans says God’s word has not fallen, distinguishing what passes from the promise that stands.
