This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens:

The word behind “abide fast by” means cling: protection here is nearness to people, not simply permission to gather.

When you are gathering what you need, exposure does not have to mean moving alone. The verse places you within a boundary and a nearby circle, where the work of gathering continues under protection. Belonging here means staying close rather than scattering into an unfamiliar field.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that survival requires you to keep searching alone dissolves here: provision can also come through being welcomed into a circle that offers protection.

Psalm 63:8 · SDV

The same root, ⁨דבק⁩ (davaq), lies behind Ruth’s “abide fast by” and the psalmist’s “followeth hard after.” The verse pairs clinging with being upheld, opening Ruth’s place among the maidens as a meeting of closeness and support.
