King James wording
King James Version
I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates budded.THE KEY
A bud already counts as evidence of flourishing: growth is visible before the harvest arrives.
THE MEANING
The speaker descends into the garden to look closely at what is growing in the valley, whether the vine has flowered and the pomegranates have budded. You see flourishing in distinct stages, including beginnings that have not yet become ripe fruit.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that growth only counts once it reaches a finished harvest; this verse notices flowering and buds as signs of flourishing in progress.
THE ROOT
הִפְרִיחָה
hiphrīḥāh
GROWS FROM
פרח
p-r-ḥ
To sprout, blossom, or break out into bloom.
“blooms” in this verse is hiphrīḥāh. The Hebrew root פרח (p-r-ḥ, “to blossom”) carries the image of life breaking out, not only success completed. Its range includes the flower and a newly hatched chick, so the vine’s bloom and the pomegranates’ buds both register as growth underway.
ALSO GROWS
perach: Flower, blossom.
פֶּרַח
The blossom is the visible sign that growth has begun.
efroaḥ: Young bird, chick.
אֶפְרֹחַ
This word for newly hatched life shares the root’s sense of something breaking out into growth.
יָרַדְתִּי
yāradti
GROWS FROM
ירד
y-r-d
To descend, go down.
“went down” in this verse is yāradti. The speaker goes down into the garden to see what is growing there. The same root names descent itself, making the act of looking an approach into the place where growth can be seen closely.
ALSO GROWS
yeridah: Descent, going down.
יְרִידָה
It names the movement the speaker makes into the garden.
Yarden: Jordan, the descending one.
יַרְדֵּן
The river’s name carries the same image of downward movement as the speaker’s descent.
THE PATTERN
Flourishing appears in stages, and early signs of growth are real evidence of life.
The buds appear on the earth; the time of singing has reached, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The wilderness and the parched place rejoice, and the desert plain leaps and blooms like the crocus. The soil bears fruit by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.THE THREAD
The wilderness and the parched place rejoice, and the desert plain leaps and blooms like the crocus. The vine’s “flourished” and Isaiah’s “blossom” draw on the Hebrew root פרח (p-r-ḥ, “to blossom”). The same word joins a tended garden and a desert: in both, flowering makes life visible.
