King James wording
King James Version
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;THE KEY
The appearing you await is the visible weight of God in Jesus, whose name carries deliverance.
THE MEANING
Your hope is a flourishing expectation that God’s weight comes into view in Jesus Christ. The phrase presents “the great God and our Saviour” as one figure, Jesus Christ: the one you await is the deliverer. His appearing remains ahead, yet already gives the present its horizon.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
What is visible now is the whole story; hope has no ground until circumstances change.
THE ROOT
δόξα
doxa
GROWS FROM
δοξ-
dox-
Glory, honor, or renown; in biblical Greek, often the word used for Hebrew כָּבוֹד (kavod, weight).
The Greek Scriptures often use δόξα (doxa, glory) for כָּבוֹד (kavod, weight), so “glorious appearing” can be heard as the appearing of God’s weight. The hope is not only that Jesus is seen, but that God’s full weight becomes visible in him.
ALSO GROWS
doxazō: To honor or bring glory to.
δοξάζω
The same stem shows that glory can be recognized and made known; the appearing reveals God’s weight.
endoxos: Honored, glorious, or distinguished.
ἔνδοξος
This branch links glory with what is seen and recognized as carrying honor.
ἐπιφάνεια
epiphaneia
GROWS FROM
ἐπιφαίνω
epiphainō
To appear or shine upon; to become visible.
“appearing” in this verse is epiphaneia. The word names what comes into view. Joined to “weight,” it makes the hope the unveiling of God’s weight in the deliverer, rather than a new thing being manufactured.
ALSO GROWS
epiphainō: To appear, shine upon, or become visible.
ἐπιφαίνω
This verb shows the action within the noun: what was awaited now comes into view.
epiphanēs: Visible, manifest, or striking.
ἐπιφανής
This branch emphasizes the unmistakable visibility carried by the promised appearing.
σωτήρ
sōtēr
GROWS FROM
σῴζω
sōzō
Deliver, bring out, or preserve safely.
“Deliverer” in this verse is sōtēr. The title names Jesus as the one who delivers. Jesus (Ἰησοῦς, Iēsous, Jesus) bears the Hebrew name Yeshua (יְשׁוּעַ, Yeshua, deliverance), from yasha (יָשַׁע, yashaʿ, deliver): the one awaited embodies movement out of constriction into spaciousness.
ALSO GROWS
sōzō: To deliver or bring safely through.
σῴζω
The verb behind “Saviour” presents deliverance as being brought out.
sōtēria: Deliverance or rescue.
σωτηρία
This branch names what the Savior brings into view.
THE PATTERN
What is awaited in hope becomes visible as God’s weight and deliverance come into view.
And the weight of the LORD is uncovered, and all flesh sees it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.Beloved, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made visible. We know that when he is made visible, we will be like him, for we will perceive him just as he is.So also the Anointed One, once brought near to carry the falling short of many, shall be perceived a second time, without falling short, by those who stretch out to receive him, into deliverance.THE THREAD
From now on a crown of alignment is laid up for me, which the Lord, the aligned judge, will give back to me on that day; and not to me only, but to all who have loved his appearing.“Appearing” translates ἐπιφάνεια (epiphaneia, manifestation or appearing), the same Greek word used in Titus 2:13. Titus names it as flourishing hope; here that hope extends to all who love the deliverer’s manifestation.
