This verse in the King James

King James wording
The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah.

The rescue order itself checks the center: Judah’s tents are delivered first, so David’s and Jerusalem’s glory cannot rise over them.

The LORD delivers Judah’s tents first. David (⁨דָּוִד⁩, Dāwîd, “beloved”) and Jerusalem (⁨יְרוּשָׁלַיִם⁩, Yerushalayim, bearing the language of wholeness) retain their honor, but that honor cannot grow above Judah. The order of protection holds the center’s splendor in check.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that royal honor or visibility gives someone a higher claim over others. Judah’s tents receive deliverance first, and Jerusalem’s glory is kept from growing above them.

הוֹשִׁיעַ

hôšîaʿ

GROWS FROM

י־ש־ע

Deliver, bring out from constriction into spaciousness.

“deliver” in this verse is hôšîaʿ. The verb carries movement out of confinement into room. Judah’s tents receive that release first, before the center’s splendor can rise over them.

ALSO GROWS

yeshuah: Deliverance.

יְשׁוּעָה

It names the spaciousness opened by the LORD’s act of saving.

moshia: Deliverer.

מוֹשִׁיעַ

It names the one who brings another out, as the LORD does for Judah’s tents.

Yeshua: The name carries the sense of deliverance.

יֵשׁוּעַ

The name holds the same movement from constriction toward spaciousness.

תִּגְדַּל

tigdal

GROWS FROM

ג־ד־ל

Grow, become great.

“swell” in this verse is tigdal. The Hebrew verb centers on growth: the glory of David’s house and Jerusalem is not to expand over Judah. The verse restrains splendor from becoming a claim of superiority.

ALSO GROWS

gadol: Great, large.

גָּדוֹל

It shares the idea of becoming great that the verse places a limit on.

higdil: Make great, enlarge.

הִגְדִּיל

It makes the growth sense visible: Jerusalem’s glory is not to be enlarged over Judah.

יְרוּשָׁלַיִם

Yerushalayim

GROWS FROM

ש־ל־ם

Wholeness, completeness; the language of shalom carried within the name.

“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim carries ⁨שָׁלוֹם⁩ (shalom, wholeness) in its name, with a dual ending held in the image of two wholenesses. Yet the city’s splendor is bounded: the place of wholeness is not to grow over Judah.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: Wholeness.

שָׁלוֹם

It brings the city’s name into view as a place bearing the language of wholeness.

shalem: Whole, complete.

שָׁלֵם

It echoes the completeness held in the name Yerushalayim.

Divine honor lifts the lowly and restrains prominence from becoming a claim to superiority.

He raises the bowed from the dust, and lifts the one in want from the ash heap, to seat them among the openhanded, and to make them hold the seat of weight. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he sets the world upon them.
1 Samuel 2:8 · SDVThe poor are raised into the place of princes, as honor moves toward those who began low.
He has pulled the mighty down from their seats, and lifted up the low.
Luke 1:52 · SDVThe mighty lose their elevated seats while those of low degree are raised.
But God picked out the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; and God picked out the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
1 Corinthians 1:27 · SDVThe weak are placed first in a way that unsettles the mighty’s claim to prominence.
And the LORD their God will deliver them in that day, as the flock of his people, for they are stones of a crown, lifted up over his ground.
Zechariah 9:16 · SDV

“Shall save” in both verses comes from ⁨יָשַׁע⁩ (yasha), to deliver and bring into spaciousness. Here the rescued people become the stones of a crown; in Zechariah 12:7, Judah’s tents receive deliverance before the house’s splendor can rise above them.
