This verse in the King James

King James wording
But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.

The Hebrew sets the human, ⁨אָדָם⁩ (adam), beside the soil, ⁨אֲדָמָה⁩ (adamah): the man who disowns prophecy names himself through work of the ground.

The speaker refuses the identity of prophet and answers with the life of labor he says formed him from youth. The sentence puts a claimed title beside the work and formation named beneath it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A prophetic title proves itself. This verse shows the title can be denied, bringing the life beneath it into view.

אָדָם

adam

GROWS FROM

אדם

ʾ-d-m

The human word-family echoes ⁨אֲדָמָה⁩ (adamah), ground or soil; human and ground carry the same consonants.

The KJV places “man” and “husbandman” far apart in English, while the Hebrew sets ⁨אָדָם⁩ (adam, human) beside ⁨עֹבֵד אֲדָמָה⁩ (oved adamah, worker of soil). That sound link joins the human with the ground in the very account that replaces a prophetic identity with a life of labor.

ALSO GROWS

adamah: ground, soil

אֲדָמָה

The ground worked by the husbandman shares the human word’s consonants, making the worker and what he works linguistically kin.

Adam: the first human; a human or person

אָדָם

The name’s echo of adamah gives “man” here more than a generic label: the human is bound to the soil.

עֹבֵד

oved

GROWS FROM

עבד

ʿ-b-d

Work, serve, or till; the word-family describes labor and service.

“one who serves the soil” in this verse is oved. The Hebrew phrase is ⁨עֹבֵד אֲדָמָה⁩ (oved adamah, worker of soil): the occupation is expressed as work upon the ground. Since this root also gives words for servant and service, the speaker’s alternative to a prophetic title is framed as a life of hands-on work.

ALSO GROWS

eved: servant

עֶבֶד

This branch shows the root’s connection between work and service, deepening the sense of the speaker’s named life.

avodah: work, labor, service

עֲבֹדָה

This noun makes the labor in “husbandman” part of a wider root-family of service.

The human is repeatedly joined to the ground: formed from it, sent to work it, and named as earth-born.

And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDVThe human and the ground appear together at the beginning, echoing Zechariah’s adam and adamah.
Therefore the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden, to serve the ground from which he was taken.
Genesis 3:23 · SDVThe human returns to work the ground from which he was taken, joining origin and labor.
The first human is of the ground, made of dust; the second human is the Lord from the heavens.
1 Corinthians 15:47 · SDVThe human is again named through the earth, carrying the ground-human link into the New Testament.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDV

Genesis sets ⁨אָדָם⁩ (adam, human) beside ⁨אֲדָמָה⁩ (adamah, ground), the same word-family echo heard in Zechariah’s worker of the soil. That link makes the speaker’s answer about labor ring with the human’s first formation from the ground.
