King James wording
King James Version
Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD.THE KEY
The song begins with the LORD’s promise to come and make the midst of you his dwelling.
THE MEANING
The verse addresses you as Zion’s daughter: the LORD comes to dwell among you, making nearness his stated intention. Your rejoicing answers that promised presence; it does not create it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that the LORD remains distant: he says, “I come,” and promises to dwell in your midst.
THE ROOT
וְשָׁכַנְתִּי
weshakhanti
GROWS FROM
שׁכן
sh-k-n
To settle, dwell, or remain.
“pitch my tent” in this verse is weshakhanti. The verb “I will dwell” comes from שׁכן (sh-k-n), meaning to settle or dwell. Its branches include מִשְׁכָּן (mishkan), a dwelling place or tabernacle, and שָׁכֵן (shakhen), a neighbor, so the promise carries both settled presence and relational nearness.
ALSO GROWS
mishkan: Dwelling place; tabernacle
מִשְׁכָּן
The same root names a place where presence settles, giving “I will dwell” the sense of an abiding home among you.
shakhen: Neighbor; one who dwells nearby
שָׁכֵן
This branch links dwelling with nearness: the LORD’s presence is among you, close as a neighbor.
THE PATTERN
God makes nearness concrete by dwelling among the people addressed.
And I will set my dwelling among you, and my living soul shall not recoil from you.And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth. And I hear a great voice from the throne, saying, Look, the tent of God is with humankind, and he will pitch his tent among them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.THE THREAD
And let them make me a set-apart place, that I may pitch my tent among them.Exodus uses שׁכן (sh-k-n), meaning “dwell,” in the promise, “that I may dwell among them.” Zechariah’s “I will dwell in the midst of thee” carries that same promise of presence into its direct address to Zion.
