King James wording
King James Version
For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.THE KEY
God’s goodness and beauty become visible as nourishment that makes life in people flourish.
THE MEANING
The LORD’s goodness and beauty meet you in the grain and wine that sustain life. The grain makes the young men flourish, and the new wine brings joy to the young women: provision becomes vitality flowering in people. Ordinary nourishment is one way divine goodness takes shape in the present.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This verse undoes the belief that divine goodness must be remote or otherworldly to matter, or that bodily nourishment and joy are too ordinary to reveal it.
THE ROOT
יְנוֹבֵב
yenovev
GROWS FROM
נוב
nub
To sprout, bear fruit, or flourish.
“laugh” in this verse is yenovev. The word rendered “cheerful” carries the image of sprouting and bearing fruit. The grain does more than lift a mood: it makes life in the young men flourish, while the paired wine brings vitality to the young women.
ALSO GROWS
yenuvun: They bring forth fruit; they flourish.
יְנוּבוּן
The same root describes flourishing that continues into old age, showing that the verse’s vitality is a form of fruitfulness.
niv: Fruit or utterance; the produce of the lips.
נִיב
This branch applies the image of fruitfulness to speech, revealing how the root can describe life producing something outward.
טוּבוֹ
tuvo
GROWS FROM
טוב
tov
To be good, pleasant, or beneficial.
“good is his goodness” in this verse is tuvo. This root gathers goodness as what is favorable and beneficial. Here, goodness stands beside beauty and takes bodily form in grain and wine: it is encountered as provision, not only named as an abstract quality.
ALSO GROWS
tov: Good, pleasant, or beneficial.
טוֹב
This basic form shows the quality named in the verse: goodness that is favorable to life.
heitiv: To do good or make better.
הֵיטִיב
This verb turns goodness into an action, echoing how the verse shows goodness taking effect through nourishment.
THE PATTERN
Divine goodness becomes tangible through provision that nourishes the body and fills life with joy.
And wine that gladdens the heart of a frail one, and oil to make his face shine, and bread that holds up the heart of a frail one.Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a good heart, for God already delights in your works.Yet he did not leave himself without witness, doing good, giving you rain from heaven and seasons that bear fruit, filling your hearts with food and gladness.THE THREAD
They still bear fruit in gray hair; they are fat and green. The Hebrew verb behind “cheerful” in Zechariah shares its root with “bring forth fruit” in this psalm. Both verses reveal vitality as fruitfulness that emerges and continues, whether through nourishment in youth or flourishing in old age.
