King James wording
King James Version
And I will encamp about mine house because of the army, because of him that passeth by, and because of him that returneth: and no oppressor shall pass through them any more: for now have I seen with mine eyes.THE KEY
The house is protected when divine presence becomes its perimeter and the oppressor loses passage.
THE MEANING
You are pictured as a dwelling held within God’s encampment, not as open ground available to every force that approaches. The pressure that crosses your boundary is not granted endless access; the verse names both the guarding and the seeing that brings that passage to an end.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that the force pressing against you has permanent right of passage through your life.
THE ROOT
וְחָנִיתִי
weḥānîtî from ḥānâ
GROWS FROM
חנה
ḥ-n-h
to encamp, pitch camp
“pitch camp” in this verse is weḥānîtî from ḥānâ. The verb and the word for a camp or host share one seed: protection here is a presence stationed around the house. The same verb describes the LORD’s messenger encamping around those who stand in awe of him in Psalm 34:7.
ALSO GROWS
maḥăneh: camp, encampment, host
מַחֲנֶה
The house is held within a positioned encampment, not left as exposed space.
ḥōneh: one who camps or encamps
חֹנֶה
The same root describes a presence taking its place around those it protects.
יַעֲבֹר
yaʿăvōr from ʿāvar
GROWS FROM
עבר
ʿ-b-r
to cross over, pass through
“cross over” in this verse is yaʿăvōr from ʿāvar. The verse uses this root first for the one who passes by and again for the oppressor who will no longer pass through. It names the threat’s route before declaring that route closed.
ALSO GROWS
ʿōvēr: one passing or crossing
עֹבֵר
The passerby in the verse shares the root of the later passage that is stopped.
maʿăvār: passage, crossing
מַעֲבָר
This branch makes the blocked route concrete: the oppressor no longer has passage through the house’s people.
נֹגֵשׂ
nōgēs from nāgaś
GROWS FROM
נגשׂ
n-g-ś
to press, drive, or exact
“one who presses” in this verse is nōgēs from nāgaś. The root gives “oppressor” the concrete force of someone pressing or exacting from another. The verse’s promise is that this pressure loses access and can no longer pass through.
ALSO GROWS
nāgaś: to press, drive, or exact
נָגַשׂ
The verb reveals the coercive action beneath the name of the oppressor.
nōgēs: taskmaster, exactor, oppressor
נֹגֵשׂ
This agent is defined by the pressure exerted; the verse says that pressure no longer gets through.
THE PATTERN
Protection is pictured as a presence set around a vulnerable people or dwelling, holding the threat at the boundary.
The messenger of the LORD encamps all around those in awe of him, and draws them out.For I, says the LORD, will be to her a wall of fire all around, and I will be the weight in the midst of her.I give them the life of the ages, and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.THE THREAD
The messenger of the LORD encamps all around those in awe of him, and draws them out.Psalm 34:7 uses the same Hebrew verb חָנָה (ḥānâ, to encamp) for the LORD’s messenger surrounding those who stand in awe of him. Its pairing of encampment with deliverance opens Zechariah’s image further: the threatened house is held by a presence that takes its place around it.
