King James wording
King James Version
I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.THE KEY
The people grieving a lost assembly are gathered with the same Hebrew root used for bringing in the harvest.
THE MEANING
God gathers those who grieve the appointed meeting and names them as still belonging to the people. The reproach weighs on them, but their sorrow does not place them beyond the gathering.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that shame or exclusion means you no longer belong dissolves here: they are still “of thee” even while carrying reproach.
THE ROOT
אָסַפְתִּי
ʾāsap̄tî
GROWS FROM
אסף
To gather, collect, or bring in.
“gather” in this verse is ʾāsap̄tî. This root also names the bringing in of a harvest. The verse uses that same gathering language for people who grieve the lost assembly: they, too, are brought in.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāsîp̄: Ingathering; the bringing in of the harvest.
אָסִיף
The Feast of Ingathering uses this same root, linking the people being gathered with what is brought in for the feast.
wayye'asef: He was gathered; used in the phrase “gathered to his people.”
וַיֵּאָסֶף
This form carries the sense of being gathered into one’s people, echoing the belonging named in “who are of thee.”
מוֹעֵד
môʿēd
GROWS FROM
יעד
To appoint or designate; set a time or place for meeting.
“appointed assembly” in this verse is môʿēd. The assembly is also an appointed meeting. The grief here touches a shared encounter that has been missed, while the mourners remain part of the people who gather.
ALSO GROWS
yāʿad: Appoint or designate.
יָעַד
The appointed character of the meeting helps explain why its absence is a source of grief.
ʿēdāh: Congregation or assembly.
עֵדָה
This related word names the people gathered together, joining the appointed time to a gathered community.
מַשְׂאֵת
maśʾēt
GROWS FROM
נשא
To lift, carry, or bear.
The reproach is pictured as a load carried by the people. This root also appears in language for bearing crookedness away, giving the burden an image of something that can be released rather than an identity they must keep.
ALSO GROWS
nāśāʾ: Lift, carry, or bear.
נָשָׂא
The verb makes the verse’s burden concrete: reproach is something borne.
nāśāʾ ʿāwōn: Carry crookedness; an idiom often rendered “forgive.”
נָשָׂא עָוֹן
The same carrying language can describe crookedness being borne away, opening a connection between the reproach carried here and release.
THE PATTERN
The shared gathering restores belonging to those who experience themselves as outcast.
The LORD builds Jerusalem; he gathers the driven-out of Israel. The Lord GOD, who gathers the driven ones of Israel, says, Yet I will gather others to him, beside those already gathered to him.For where two or three are gathered together in my nature, there I am in the midst of them.THE THREAD
And the feast of reaping, the first-ripened of your work, which you sow in the field. And the feast of gathering in, at the going out of the year, when you gather in your work from the field. The Hebrew word for “ingathering” (אָסִיף, asif) shares the אסף root with “I will gather” in Zephaniah. The root links the grieving community and the harvest: both are brought in.
