King James wording
King James Version
And when Jobab was dead, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead.THE KEY
Rule survives its occupant: Jobab dies, and Husham takes the place he leaves.
THE MEANING
A life ends, but the place of rule remains open to another. Jobab is dead; Husham reigns in his stead, holding the person and the office apart. The verse names the succession without giving a reason for it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
One ruler’s death does not necessarily end the rule he held; another can take his place.
THE ROOT
וַיִּמְלֹךְ
vayimlokh
GROWS FROM
מלך
M-L-K
To reign or act as king.
“reigned” in this verse is vayimlokh. The verb shares its root with the words for “king” and “kingdom,” joining the ruler, the act of ruling, and the realm in one word-family. Here, the reign continues while its occupant changes.
ALSO GROWS
melek: King
מֶלֶךְ
The title for the person who rules comes from the same root as the act of reigning.
mamlakhah: Kingdom or realm
מַמְלָכָה
The domain under a king’s rule shares the same root, linking the ruler’s role to the realm that continues after him.
THE PATTERN
A human office can continue through succession even as the people who hold it pass away.
Then Solomon settled upon the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was set very firm. One generation walks away, and another generation comes, but the earth stands for ages. And they truly were many priests, for death held them back from remaining.THE THREAD
And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead. The same verb וַיִּמְלֹךְ (vayimlokh, “and he reigned”) first makes Jobab Bela’s successor, then Husham’s predecessor. Together, the verses show kingship passing from one life to the next.
