This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Rule survives its occupant: Jobab dies, and Husham takes the place he leaves.

A life ends, but the place of rule remains open to another. Jobab is dead; Husham reigns in his stead, holding the person and the office apart. The verse names the succession without giving a reason for it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

One ruler’s death does not necessarily end the rule he held; another can take his place.

וַיִּמְלֹךְ

vayimlokh

GROWS FROM

מלך

M-L-K

To reign or act as king.

“reigned” in this verse is vayimlokh. The verb shares its root with the words for “king” and “kingdom,” joining the ruler, the act of ruling, and the realm in one word-family. Here, the reign continues while its occupant changes.

ALSO GROWS

melek: King

מֶלֶךְ

The title for the person who rules comes from the same root as the act of reigning.

mamlakhah: Kingdom or realm

מַמְלָכָה

The domain under a king’s rule shares the same root, linking the ruler’s role to the realm that continues after him.

A human office can continue through succession even as the people who hold it pass away.

Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.
1 Kings 2:12 · KJVSolomon takes the throne after David, showing rule carried forward through a new occupant.
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
Ecclesiastes 1:4 · KJVOne generation gives way to another while what holds them continues.
And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:
Hebrews 7:23 · KJVDeath prevents each priest from continuing, so the office passes through many lives.
And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.
Genesis 36:33 · KJV

The same verb ⁨וַיִּמְלֹךְ⁩ (vayimlokh, “and he reigned”) first makes Jobab Bela’s successor, then Husham’s predecessor. Together, the verses show kingship passing from one life to the next.
