This verse in the King James

King James wording
For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.

The tabernacle’s name means dwelling, yet its dwelling moves; divine presence is real without a permanent address.

God’s presence is not made real by a permanent house. The dwelling moves with the people, so transition does not mean absence. Presence remains among them even as its address changes.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that sacred presence is available only in a permanent, impressive place.

מִשְׁכָּן

mishkan

GROWS FROM

שכן

sh-k-n

To dwell, settle, or abide.

Mishkan means a dwelling place, from shakan, “to dwell”; the verse sets that name beside a journey from tent to tent. The root keeps attention on the act of dwelling even while the dwelling place moves.

ALSO GROWS

shakhan: To dwell or settle.

שָׁכַן

This verb is the root’s action: dwelling can be present without being fixed in a house.

shakhen: Neighbor; one who dwells nearby.

שָׁכֵן

The neighbor is defined by nearness and shared place, echoing a presence that moves among people.

mishkan: Dwelling place; tabernacle.

מִשְׁכָּן

The word names the tent as a place of dwelling, so its mobility does not make it less a dwelling.

God’s dwelling is among people and is not confined to a permanent building.

And let them make me a set-apart place, that I may pitch my tent among them.
Exodus 25:8 · SDVThe sanctuary’s purpose is stated as God dwelling among the people.
Yet the Highest does not settle in what is made by hands, as the prophet says.
Acts 7:48 · SDVThe verse names the limit directly: a human-made temple does not contain the Most High.
And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth.
John 1:14 · SDVIts verb for dwelling carries the image of taking up a tent among people.
And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth.
John 1:14 · SDV

The Greek verb ⁨ἐσκήνωσεν⁩ (eskēnōsen, pitched a tent or tabernacled) gives “dwelt” a tent-shaped image. It opens this verse further: dwelling among people is not diminished by moving beyond a permanent house.
