Selah Decoded Version The Selah Decoded Version renders what the Hebrew and Greek words meant to the people who first heard them.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

Even knowing and prophesying happen in portions; neither presently holds the whole.

You know by encounter, but your knowing remains partial. What you speak prophetically is partial too; what is present is real without being the whole.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that a partial insight must be false or that a genuine word must be complete. Partiality names its measure, not its unreality.

μέρους

merous

GROWS FROM

μερ-

mer-

A portion or share; that which is apportioned.

“in pieces” in this verse is merous. The Greek says “out of a portion” (⁨ἐκ μέρους⁩, ek merous) twice: both knowing and prophesying come from a share, not from the whole. Their limit belongs to what reaches you now; it does not make either one unreal.

ALSO GROWS

merizō: To divide or distribute into shares.

μερίζω

The same word family names both the portion received and the act of apportioning it, making the limit in this verse structural.

meris: A share or portion.

μερίς

This related word reinforces that “part” is a measure one receives, not simply an absence of knowing.

γινώσκομεν

ginōskomen

GROWS FROM

γινωσκ-

ginōsk-

To know, recognize, or perceive through encounter.

“know” in this verse is ginōskomen. The verse speaks of knowing by encounter, yet even this kind of knowing is partial. The word does not reduce knowing to information; it shows that present perception itself reaches you in measure.

ALSO GROWS

gnōsis: Knowledge or knowing.

γνῶσις

It shares the knowing word-family, linking the act of knowing here to knowledge as something received.

epiginōskō: To recognize or know fully.

ἐπιγινώσκω

This related form appears in verse 12, where knowing in part is set beside a fuller, face-to-face knowing.

What is true can be received in a real but bounded measure while the whole remains beyond present grasp.

The hidden things belong to the LORD our God, but the uncovered things belong to us and to our children for the ages, that we may do all the words of this instruction.
Deuteronomy 29:29 · SDVThe verse marks a boundary between what remains hidden and what is revealed, showing that human knowing begins with what is disclosed.
And with many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they could hear it.
Mark 4:33 · SDVReception has a measure: the word reaches hearers as they are able to receive it.
For now we see through a mirror, in a riddle; but then face to face. Now I know in pieces; but then I shall know wholly, even as I was known.
1 Corinthians 13:12 · SDVKnowing is partial now and opens toward a fuller, face-to-face knowing.
For now we see through a mirror, in a riddle; but then face to face. Now I know in pieces; but then I shall know wholly, even as I was known.
1 Corinthians 13:12 · SDV

The Greek repeats both “in part” and the same knowing word-family in verse 12. It places today’s portion beside a fuller, face-to-face knowing, so the limit here belongs to the present measure rather than to knowing’s whole horizon.
