King James wording
King James Version
These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.THE KEY
The people who seduce you are, at the root, leading you off course.
THE MEANING
These words meet you now, naming the voices that draw you away from what is true. The danger is a movement off course, whether the pull comes through persuasion or confusion. Once that movement is named, it becomes easier to recognize.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse loosens the idea that seduction is only an attractive invitation; its root also names being led away from your path.
THE ROOT
πλανώντων
planōntōn
GROWS FROM
πλαν-
plan-
To wander or stray; in this form, to lead someone astray.
“make you wander” in this verse is planōntōn. The Greek verb presents seduction as a change of direction: someone is drawing you away from the path. English can make the word sound like mere allure, while the root reveals the movement underneath it.
ALSO GROWS
planē: Wandering; error.
πλάνη
This branch names the off-course state that results when someone is led astray.
planos: A wanderer; a deceiver.
πλάνος
This branch names the one whose influence draws others away from the way.
THE PATTERN
Deception pulls a person off course, while truth makes both the path and the pull visible.
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path. You therefore, beloved, since you know these things beforehand, guard yourselves, lest you also, carried off by the wandering of the lawless, fall from your own steadiness. For many wanderers have gone out into the world, who do not speak the same of Jesus the Anointed One, that he has come in the flesh. This is the wanderer, and the one set against the Anointed One.THE THREAD
For many wanderers have gone out into the world, who do not speak the same of Jesus the Anointed One, that he has come in the flesh. This is the wanderer, and the one set against the Anointed One.“Deceivers” here translates planos, from the same Greek word family as “seduce” in this verse. Both passages expose deception as wandering from the truth, and as drawing others into that same wandering.
